The India Meteorological Department (IMD) celebrated its 147th Foundation Day on 14 Jan, at the Ministry of Earth Sciences Government of India HQ, New Delhi, in the presence of our Hon'ble Union Minister, Dr Jitendra Singh, as Chief Guest and other eminent dignitaries. The event encompassed the inauguration of new weather radars, initiatives and publications.

The event witnessed the presence and keynote address of dignitaries Dr M Ravichandran Secy, MoES; Dr M Mohapatra, DGM, IMD; Dr K Sivan, Chairman ISRO - Indian Space Research Organisation; Sh Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, MP-Ladakh; Sh R K Mathur, Lt. Governor of Ladakh; and Dr S.D. Attri, Scientist G, IMD.
At the event, four new Doppler Weather Radars (DWR) at Ayanagar, New Delhi; Pallikaranai, Chennai; Veravali, Mumbai and Leh, Ladakh were launched by the Hon'ble Union Minister, Dr Jitendra Singh. The DWRs will help to enhance the weather observation and forecast network of the country. These DWRs are indigenously developed and aligned with the vision and initiative of the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, Sh Narendra Modi.
With the four new DWRs, a website for services, the web version of the report entitled ''Climate Hazards and Vulnerability Atlas of India' was released which includes data on the 13 most hazardous meteorological events such as cold wave, heatwave, flood, lightning, snowfall, dust storm, hail storm, thunderstorm, fog, strong winds, extreme rainfall drought and cyclone.
A çrowd sourcing' mobile app that enables the public to upload location-specific weather and events information with pictures was also launched. Another report on the use of weather information for secure, reliable and economic operation of the Indian power grid and efficient power system operations, by IMD and POSOCO (Power System Corporation Limited), was also released.
The 34th edition of the IMD Hindi magazine ‘Mausam Manjusha’ and other publications catering to weather services were also launched at the event.
The event concluded with the appreciation remarks from the Hon’ble Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh; Dr RK Mathur, Lt. Governor of Ladakh; and Sh Tsering Namgyal, MP–Ladakh, who emphasized that IMD, an institute under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) for their remarkable contribution in weather observations and forecasts services for the country.
