As we celebrate Diwali – the Festival of Lights, I extend my heartfelt wishes to everyone for a Happy Diwali and a Prosperous New Year.

Diwali stands as a timeless symbol of the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. It is a time when families unite, homes are illuminated, and communities come together in a spirit of joy, gratitude, and renewal.

While the Vikram Samvat calendar traditionally begins with Chaitra Shukla Pratipada (in March–April), many communities across western India — particularly in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan — celebrate the New Year immediately after Diwali, marking the first day of the month of Kartik. Known as Bestu Varas in Gujarat, this day signifies new beginnings, fresh aspirations, and renewed faith in the journey ahead.

This season reminds us of the universal values of hope, unity, and compassion — values that transcend borders and continue to guide us toward a brighter, more harmonious world.

As light conquers darkness, may we also illuminate the paths of understanding, peace, and progress between nations and communities. Let us all take this opportunity to renew our commitment to kindness and shared prosperity.

In moments of crisis, communities often face a choice:
-> Escalate division through silence, fear, and misinformation, or
-> Build understanding through dialogue, empathy, and leadership.

During some of the most challenging moments I’ve witnessed, from community unrest in the UK to periods of geopolitical tension affecting diaspora groups, one principle has consistently proven its strength:
Real dialogue can prevent real damage.

When tensions arose around the Kashmir conflict and Leicester unrest, emotions were running high. Fear and misunderstanding spread faster than facts. But instead of letting divides deepen, we brought community leaders, faith representatives, youth voices, and law enforcement together in the same room.

We didn’t focus on blame. We focused on listening deeply, creating safe spaces for conversation, and building trust step by step.

The result wasn’t instant. But over time, dialogue calmed anxieties, reduced hostility, and opened doors for cooperation that simply wouldn’t have been possible through statements or enforcement alone.

Crisis resolution is not only about policies, it’s about people.
Community dialogue works because it brings humanity back into the equation.

In a world where divisions can flare quickly, leaders and communities must invest in dialogue before, during, and after crises. It is the most powerful, underused tool we have for lasting peace.

The COVID-19 pandemic was a defining moment for our generation. It tested leadership, resilience, community spirit, and global cooperation in ways few crises ever have.

While the world has moved forward, the lessons from that time remain as relevant today as they were then.

During the pandemic, I worked closely with community organisations, volunteers, and universities to support thousands of Indian students stranded across the UK. It was a time of fear, uncertainty, and rapid action. And it taught me lessons that continue to guide my leadership today:

1. Community Is Our Greatest Strength
When systems are stretched, communities step up. It was local networks, diaspora groups, and volunteers who became the lifeline for many. In 2025, community resilience remains critical for any crisis local or global.

2. Leadership Is About Showing Up
Titles don’t lead in times of crisis, people do. Leadership in those months meant listening, acting quickly, and standing shoulder to shoulder with those in need. That principle applies to diplomacy, trade, and humanitarian work even today.

3. Collaboration Breaks Barriers
The pandemic blurred lines between organisations, communities, and nations. Governments, NGOs, businesses, and individuals worked together like never before. In an interconnected world, this spirit of cross-sector collaboration is essential to solve emerging challenges.

4. Compassion Is Not Optional
The most powerful resource we had was empathy. Beyond policies and logistics, it was compassion that made people feel seen and supported. In 2025, in a world of rapid change, compassion remains a timeless leadership trait.

The world may have moved on, but these lessons continue to shape how we lead, collaborate, and care for one another.

The relationship between India and the United Kingdom has always been unique shaped by shared history, cultural ties, and people-to-people connections that span generations. But as we look to the next decade, one factor will define the strength and depth of this partnership more than anything else: Trade.

Trade is more than the exchange of goods. It’s the exchange of trust, opportunity, and ideas. It’s what transforms cultural connection into economic collaboration.

In recent years, India has emerged as one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, while the UK continues to be a global hub for finance, innovation, and education. Together, these strengths can create a partnership that is both strategic and future-focused.

A comprehensive trade agreement between India and the UK has the potential to:
• Boost bilateral trade to unprecedented levels
• Open doors for SMEs, startups, and tech innovators in both nations
• Facilitate easier movement of talent, students, and professionals

Service has always been at the heart of our family’s journey.

From supporting schools and hospitals to funding orphanages and elderly care centres in both the UK and India, giving back is not something we do occasionally, it’s part of who we are.

Through our family foundation, we have worked quietly but consistently to support underprivileged communities. Whether it’s helping build educational institutions, funding healthcare projects, or providing essentials to those in need, the goal has always been simple: to serve with sincerity.

Joining the Board of Variety Scotland is a continuation of this legacy. It allows me to combine my professional networks, diplomatic efforts, and personal values to create meaningful impact.

My story began long before me.
In the 1940s, my grandfather Shri Tarsem Lal left India for the UK with little but courage, resilience, and hope. He embraced his new home while preserving his roots, a true pioneer.

My father, Shri Tarsem Shiv Lal, built on that foundation with integrity and service, while my mother, Kusam Lata Lal, has been our pillar of strength and values.

Today, I carry this legacy forward, building bridges between the UK and India through trade, diplomacy, and humanitarian service.

In every journey, there are moments when the world sees the achievements, the awards, the speeches, and the milestones.
But what often remains unseen is the quiet strength that makes it all possible.

For me, that strength has always been my wife, Pooja.

Throughout my personal, professional, and humanitarian journey whether it was leading trade delegations, mediating difficult community conversations, or responding to global crisis, she has stood by me as an anchor, a confidant, and a constant source of wisdom.

Leadership can be demanding. It often requires long hours, difficult decisions, and unwavering focus. But it is her grace, patience, and belief that have given me the courage to keep moving forward, even in the toughest times.

She has been by my side not just as a partner in life, but as a partner in purpose supporting the vision to build bridges between communities, countries, and cultures.
