Akosua Viktoria Adu-Sanyah and Burkhard Meltzer at Month of Practice 2023 in Vietnam

AKOSUA VIKTORIA ADU-SANYAH: During my residency, I plan to explore the interplay of mobility, dreamscapes, and transition using photographic processes and moving imagery. My project is anchored in the contrasting dimensions of motion – the perceived immobility of trees, the unrestricted movement in dreams, and the distinct patterns of animal motion.

DR. BURKHARD MELTZER: My plans for the residency in Hanoi are to take part in the scheduled mentoring program of MAP 2023, to get in touch with and to explore the contemporary art scene in Hanoi/Vietnam and to provide insights in my current research on transcultural relations between Europe and East Asia in contemporary art.

In pictures: Installation curated by Dr. Burkhard Meltzer and artwork by Akosua Viktoria Adu-Sanyah (.silvery).

EQUALITY! by the Company Lindh & Weingartner is a duet about a woman and a man that wish to be completely equal. Amidst the audiences sitting in a circle, with full physical commitment and a lot of humour, the duo find all kinds of absurd ways to demonstrate what equality between two people of different sexes could look like. They decide together, face the same challenges, give each other the same chances and get equal attention. Even though it is sometimes difficult, they do not give up, because one thing is certain: in each case they are equally unique!

Borders

This month invites us to linger over borders, to question them, and to cross them. Company Weingartner and Lindh's EQUALITY! is set to tour the NorthEast of India with workshops and performances questioning and touching upon the liminality of gender. Performers Rebecca Weingartner (.weingartner) and Benjamin Lindh Medin () will be on research trip in India delving into the same questions.

Artist Akosua Viktoria Adu-Sanyah (.silvery) and curator Dr. Burkhard Meltzer will be at the Month of Art Practice in Hanoi negotiating dreamscapes in photography and transculturality respectively. Meanwhile, Vietnamese performer Thanh-Toan Doan () will be on residency in Switzerland exploring performativity and theater in dance. Borders of self and other are explored in the co-creation project entitled The Intimate Borders of Liminal Love, as three artists encounter themselves and each other.

The Art Writers' Award 2023 announces an opportunity for art writers to travel on residency to Switzerland. And finally, the gallery presents a polyphony of sounds from Delhi, and glimpses from Katja Brunner's () poetry workshop in Kathmandu.

A thousand words

Words are such stuff, as worlds are built on. And pictures, they say, are worth a thousand words. Through both these worlds, of words and images, we present to you our recent goings-on in South Asia.

Our gallery this month presents a 'leap into the unfamiliar' - Rolf Hermann's (.rolf) poetry workshop last month in Bhutan. We also dive in this month into literature, with Katja Brunner () presenting a poetry workshop in Nepal, and readings of her works in both Nepal and India at the much-awaited Long Night of LiteratureS.

Plat(t)form Winterthur 2023 showcases, among others, the works of Vietnamese photographer Van Nhi Nguyen (), and curators from Nepal, Hit Man Gurung and Sheelasha Rajbhandari ().

This month also sees curator Mirjam Varadinis on a research trip to India, while Indian curator Anushka Rajendran () travels on a research trip to Switzerland. Meanwhile, Yangzom Wujohktsang embarks on residency to Nepal.

At last but not the least, we invite you to apply to our support measures - Synergies and Co-creation.

His art has been exhibited internationally in countries like South Korea, France, Germany, Japan, and more.

Aryakrishnan Ramakrishnan is an artist and curator based in Kerala, India. They completed their MA in Visual Arts from School of Culture and Creative Expressions, Ambedkar University, Delhi, 2014. Their ongoing project ‘Sweet Maria Monument’ is a monument for a transgender activist and performer who was murdered in 2012 in Kerala, India.

“I am looking at the Sommerakademie Paul Klee (SPK) programme as an opportunity to get back in to rigorous practice where I can put my insights in to use with a community of other practitioners,” says Aryakrishnan, “A residency programme like this one at Bern, will allow me to gain knowledge from an international community while conceptually and materially reimagining my existing work. This can enable me to create a new body of work and open up a new trajectory in my practice. I wish the critical insights and collaboration possibilities I get from this program will help me to contribute to the field of q***r knowledge production in a significant way. I also feel this will help me to revisit my community work with new insights on how to understand and work with institutions and communities.”

Poetry, performance, art - "we are such stuff," as Shakespeare would say, "as dreams are made on." Alongside the ongoing support grants, Synergies and Co-creation, August also offers up new 'stuff'. We travel with poet Rolf Hermann (.rolf) to the Bhutan Echoes festival where he offers a poetry workshop 'A Leap into the Unfamiliar.' We also visit Ladakh with artist Małgorzata Stankiewicz () for South Asia’s highest ever contemporary land art group exhibition.

Indian artist and curator Aryakrishnan Ramakrishnan () will be on residency at Sommerakademie Paul Klee, while Burmese performance artists Yadanar Win () and Ko Latt () go on a research trip to Switzerland. Goa-based photography curator Lola Mac Dougall () also embarks on a research trip to Switzerland to explore how yoga has travelled in photography. Małgorzata Stankiewicz is an artist, poet and a re-searcher, an older sister, a daughter, and an aunt of Baltic-Slavic descent. In her lifework practice, Małgo is curiously drawn to ways of knowing that have been forgotten or erased, intentionally or otherwise, by the predominant Western culture of domination and rationalism. Weaving together performance, poetry, installation and sound, Małgo’s work circulates around the notions of ecology, community, storytelling, symbolism, ritual and meaningful chance, and is deeply informed by her interdisciplinary approach to research and commitment to bringing together hitherto separate threads of knowledge.

Małgo will be on residency in Leh and Ladakh in India. Upon the invitation of the Embassy of Switzerland in India, and as part of SwitzerlandIndia75 years, Małgo will also participate in the sā Ladakh festival in India in August 2003. At 3600m, the exhibition is one of South Asia’s highest ever contemporary land art group exhibition, focusing on the theme of mountains, environment, culture and community. Małgo will be conducting a workshop with school kids and also creating a site-specific work in Ladakh.

Jessy Razafimandimby lives and works in Geneva. His work gives new life to a world inherited from the past, paying particular attention to the history of interior decoration and ornamentation, as well as to social conventions and “good manners” traditionally linked to a conservative lifestyle and promoted by a classist bourgeois system. Figures sometimes seem to melt into the work, moving into new, complex forms that reveal Razafimandimby’s interest in the question of becoming. It’s not so much what we become, but with whom we become it.

We start off the July newsletter by congratulating the recipients of the 2024 studio residency, both from Switzerland and South Asia. This, followed by a reminder of our support measures: Synergies and Co-creation.

In events, artist Jessy Razafimandimby's work is on exhibit in New Delhi alongside other artists. Jessy also presents a workshop at the KNMA that digs into the unseen and the invisible, culminating in a performance at the venue along with a walk through his exhibit. Also in New Delhi, a preview of the performance 'Hallucinations of an Artifact' questions simple narratives surrounding the 'Dancing Girl of Mohenjo-Daro'.

Artist and environmentalist Małgorzata Stankiewicz arrives on a residency to India this month. And in parting, we also highlight in our gallery the recent Tapan Moharana's Open Day from his residency in Switzerland featuring a play of light and shadows.

Glimpses from Open Studio 2 - TEMPLE OF LIGHT

A site specific shadow projection by TAPAN Moharana ()

Tapan's work "Temple of Light" is an interactive, random shadow play in which the audience can  participate and so becomes part of the story. Like the Rabanachhaya, which comments on the good  and evil in human nature through retellings of the mythology of light and darkness. The shadows  and light reflected by the mirror puppets in this work represent the shadow self in a "Jungian" sense,  in an individual as well as in a broader social context. In this manner, The “Temple of Light" becomes  a commentary on the darker sides of our shared history in terms of poverty and class-based  inequalities. The work offers space to rethink the meaning of society, life and ecology.

20/06/2023

‘PoroCity’ was a site-specific spatial intervention by the Swiss architecture studio Graber & Steiger held at Kalakendra Art Space, Dhaka in May 2023. The installation in the gallery and the adjacent urban space gave the opportunity to explore the notion of ‘enabling structures’ in different architectural and urban scales.  The installation triggerd a dialogue about architectonical structures that may be the actual DNA of welcoming places which unfold a porous setting for vivid social interaction and future oriented transformations.

The exhibition provided a glimpse into architectonical works, which are characterized by permeable spatial structures that invite for a free appropriation by the users. The scenographic setting of the installation was embedded in a circular concept for the reuse of the modular exhibition structure in the everyday life of Dhaka’s micro-urbanism.

'PoroCity' was on display from 8-29 May at Kalakendra Art Space in Dhaka, Bangladesh

Artist Tapan Moharana will be holding an Open Studio at Gleis70 on 21 June (details below).

During his Residency in Switzerland, the work “ Temple of Light" was created by combining kinetic art  observations and his artistic practice of shadow Play. The mechanical nature of the installation  creates through invisible energy random loops and cycles of movement which generate a new sense  of shadow play that interacts with the present. The work is based on the concept of "Shunyata", the  zero or void, the indefinite temporal space, which is equally a culmination point.

𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝟭𝟯 𝗙𝗲𝗯 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟮: Join us for the screening of TRIXIE, followed by a conversation with Nicole Seiler at the Attakkalari Centre.

Written by Nicole Seiler and directed by Bastien Genoux, 𝗧𝗥𝗜𝗫𝗜𝗘 draws a sensitive portrait of Beatrice Cordua aka Trixie. As a dancer, Trixie has led a rather fascinating life having known and worked with the great dance icons of her time such as Pina Bausch, Maurice Béjart and John Neumeier. Seiler is in India on a studio residency via Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia.

In this critically-acclaimed documentary, the 80-year-old sketches her incredible career by tackling the intimate question of her relationship with her aging body.
