MASSIVE FLASH FLOOD IN NEPAL 🇳🇵

A massive and sudden flash flood struck the Bhotekoshi River area of Rasuwa district in northern Nepal on Wednesday morning, August 26.
🌊 Several villages and infrastructure near the Nepal–Tibet border have been severely affected. Roads, bridges, buildings and hydropower infrastructure have reportedly been damaged.
⚠️ Deaths and missing persons have been reported, while security forces are continuing rescue operations.
Authorities are still investigating the exact cause. Initial reports suggest the flood may have originated from the Tibet side, possibly linked to a landslide or sudden release of water. The claim of a cloudburst has not yet been officially confirmed.

A Vision for a Cleaner, Safer and More Developed Silapathar City

Silapathar is an important commercial and connecting town of Dhemaji district, serving as a gateway for people travelling towards different parts of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. With the city's growing population, traffic and commercial activities, there is an urgent need for planned and modern development.

The following five development works should be given priority to transform Silapathar into a better, cleaner, safer and more well-planned city:

1. 🛣️ Better Roads & Strong Road Infrastructure

All major roads connecting Silapathar with surrounding areas should be properly repaired, widened and maintained. Roads should be free from potholes and dust, with proper road markings, streetlights, footpaths and regular cleanliness. Good roads are the foundation of a developed city.

2. 🚦 Urgent Flyover at Silapathar Railway Gate

The Silapathar Railway Gate near Hanuman Mandir has become a major traffic bottleneck. A flyover/road overbridge should be constructed on an urgent basis to provide smooth connectivity towards Akajan–Likabali and reduce long traffic queues whenever trains pass through the railway crossing.

3. 🌧️ Modern Drainage & Water Management System

Silapathar needs a scientific and permanent drainage system. During heavy rainfall, waterlogging creates serious problems for residents, pedestrians and businesses. Proper covered drains, storm-water channels and regular cleaning should be developed across the city to ensure efficient drainage.

4. 🚧 Widening of Main Road & Proper Management of Roadside Shops

After the installation of the road divider on the main city road, the usable road space has become narrower in several locations due to roadside stalls and shops. A planned solution is needed—widen the road wherever possible, clear encroachments through proper procedures, and provide designated vending/market spaces so that both businesses and traffic can function smoothly.

5. 🌆 Modern City Facilities & Clean Silapathar Mission

Silapathar needs to move towards a modern and well-planned urban environment. Priority should be given to proper streetlights, parking spaces, public toilets, solid-waste management, pedestrian footpaths, green spaces, organised auto/e-rickshaw stands and regular cleanliness drives.

A Better Silapathar Is Possible

Development is not only about constructing new buildings and roads—it is about creating a city where people can travel safely, businesses can grow, rainwater can drain properly, and citizens can live with dignity and convenience.

With proper planning, strong administration and people's cooperation, Silapathar can become one of the cleanest, safest and best-connected towns of Upper Assam.

Silapathar deserves development that matches its importance. The time for planned development is now.

Meghalaya Tourism Issues Helpline for Tourists Amid Shillong Tensions

The Meghalaya Tourism Department on Thursday, August 20, issued a toll-free helpline number for tourists and visitors seeking assistance amid the prevailing law-and-order situation in Shillong following violence during a Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) black-flag bike rally on Wednesday evening.

The department urged tourists and visitors requiring assistance to contact the Tourism Toll-Free Helpline: 1800-599-2026.

Officials said the department is closely monitoring developments across Shillong and keeping watch on any situation that could affect tourists and visitors. The department reiterated that the safety and well-being of everyone visiting Meghalaya remains a priority and encouraged those requiring assistance or information to contact the authorities.

Reports suggest that some tourists from other states have cancelled or reconsidered their Shillong trips following incidents of violence, arson and vandalism during Wednesday’s KSU rally.

Meanwhile, Shillong remained relatively calm on Thursday amid heightened security arrangements.

⚠️ LIKABALI BORDER SITUATION TURNS TENSE

An initially peaceful TMPK demonstration at Likabali on the Assam–Arunachal Pradesh border reportedly witnessed a tense turn, with reports of stone-pelting and alleged firing.

The development has raised serious concerns about the safety of protesters and local residents. Authorities should take immediate steps to restore calm, protect civilians and verify the circumstances surrounding the incident.

This is a sensitive border issue. We urge everyone to avoid spreading unverified information and allow the authorities to conduct a proper investigation.

🙏 Let peace and dialogue prevail over confrontation.

🚧 Finally, Some Relief for Silapathar!

After years of public demand and deteriorating road conditions, repair work has finally begun on the Silapathar–Jonai Link Road and Akajan–Likabali Link Road.

The work was launched in the presence of MP Lakhimpur Lok Sabha constituency Shri Pradan Baruah, Silapathar Mandal Committee president Ganga Pegu, officials of the Silapathar Municipal Board, and other dignitaries.
