On June 21, 2024, the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) in Dibrugarh, in collaboration with counterparts from Tinsukia, Sonari, and Sivasagar districts, organized a protest against perceived irregularities and corruption in the NEET (National Eligibility cm Entrance Test) and UGC-NET (University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test) examinations.
The protest was aimed at highlighting alleged scams that have compromised the integrity of these critical examinations. The NEET exam is essential for medical college admissions in India, while the UGC-NET determines eligibility for college and university level lectureship and for Junior Research Fellowship awards.
The demonstrators accused authorities of mishandling the examination processes, citing issues such as question paper leaks, unfair practices, and the involvement of coaching centers and other entities in manipulating exam outcomes. They demanded thorough investigations and stringent actions against those found guilty to restore faith in the examination system. The protest saw significant participation from students, educational activists, and concerned citizens, reflecting widespread discontent and calling for reforms to ensure transparency and fairness in these pivotal educational assessments.
