Erstwhile Rangapahar Wildlife Sanctuary a part of Rangapahar Reserve Forest, this place was rechristened as “Nagaland Zoological Park, Rangapahar” on 28th of August 2008, and formally inaugurated by the then Forest Minister Shri. M.C.Konyak.
The zoo covers an area of about 176 Hectares and located at about 8 km SE from the commercial city of Dimapur in Nagaland.
Apart from the display of a wide range of animals and birds collection the zoo provides an ideal spot for sightseeing, recreational activities and picnic spots. A collection of herbs and medicinal plants are found at "Herbal Garden" inside the zoo.
In the year 2008, on inauguration, the zoo animal population was 64. In less than 10 years the zoo now has a population of 356 individuals comprising of 44 different species of animals and birds in the collection. Apart from captive species, the zoo offers a vast expanse of free and open space for free ranging species such as sambar deer, barking deer, spotted deer, many species of reptiles, different bird species, insects, as well as migratory birds visiting the wilderness area of the zoo.
