Assam–Meghalaya Border Communities Sign Peace Agreement to Ease Long-Standing Tensions
Baithalangso, June 2: In a significant step towards restoring peace and harmony along the Assam–Meghalaya border, a high-level meeting was held today at an Assam Police temporary camp in the border area of West Karbi Anglong district. The meeting brought together representatives of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) and the Government of Meghalaya to address issues affecting residents of the border villages of Tapat in Assam and Lapangap in Meghalaya.
The meeting was attended by KAAC Chief Executive Member Dr. Tuliram Ronghang and Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, along with senior administrative, police and political representatives from both states. The discussion focused on resolving disputes related to agricultural activities and ensuring peaceful coexistence between communities residing along the border.
The Assam–Meghalaya border region has witnessed tensions and conflicts over the years, resulting in periodic unrest among local residents. Against this backdrop, both sides engaged in constructive dialogue and reached a mutually agreed understanding aimed at maintaining peace and facilitating agricultural activities in the disputed area. Under the agreement, residents of Lapangap village will continue cultivating agricultural land in the plains and foothill areas of Tapat where they have traditionally carried out farming activities, including on land previously purchased from Karbi residents. At the same time, Karbi farmers from Tapat will be free to undertake cultivation of seasonal crops such as banana, pineapple and ginger in the adjoining hilly and sloping areas without interference.
The agreement also emphasizes the commitment of both communities to maintain peace, harmony and law and order in the border region while broader boundary-related issues continue to be addressed by the competent authorities of the two states. The understanding was formally endorsed by representatives of both villages, with Dr. Tuliram Ronghang and Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar signing as witnesses.
Speaking after the meeting, Dr. Ronghang expressed satisfaction with the outcome and stated that the understanding recognizes the long-standing agricultural practices of both communities while safeguarding the rights of local residents. He noted that the discussions were conducted in a cordial atmosphere and reflected the shared desire of both sides to prevent future conflicts.
Deputy Chief Minister Dhar also welcomed the agreement and expressed confidence that it would help strengthen peace and mutual trust between the people of Tapat and Lapangap. He emphasized that the purpose of the meeting was to ensure peaceful agricultural activities and maintain stability in the region.
The successful conclusion of the meeting is being viewed as a positive development that could contribute to greater cooperation and lasting peace along the Assam–Meghalaya border.
