Lamberdars and Chowkidars Seek Minimum Wages, Honorarium Hike After Years of Low Pay

Jammu & Kashmir's Lamberdars and Chowkidars continue to face concerns over their very low monthly honorarium. Lamberdars are currently receiving around ₹1,501 per month, while Chowkidars receive ₹1,500, with the existing rates dating back to 2016.

Despite their role in supporting the administration at the grassroots level, including assisting in local administrative, revenue, police and other government-related duties, their monthly payment remains extremely low compared with today's cost of living.

There is now a strong demand that the J&K Government consider bringing Lamberdars and Chowkidars under the Minimum Wages Act. If that is not immediately possible, the government should at least increase their honorarium to a more reasonable and respectable level in view of inflation and their responsibilities.

This is not being presented as a fresh government announcement. Rather, it is an appeal to the J&K Government to seriously consider the long-standing concerns of Lamberdars and Chowkidars and provide them better financial support.

A delegation of the Lamberdars & Chowkidar headed by Sh Naeem Ahmad Butt, held an important meeting in Srinagar with Sh Nasir Aslam Wani - Sogami , Hon’ble Advisor to the Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, Janab Omar Abdullah, and submitted a memorandum.

During the meeting, detailed discussions were held regarding the day-to-day issues faced by Lamberdars and Chowkidars, pending salaries, and other difficulties. They specifically demanded that the salaries pending for the past one and a half to two years be released at the earliest.

Sh Nasir Aslam Wani assured the delegation that the issues of Lamberdars and Chowkidars, particularly the matter of salary enhancement, would receive special attention during the upcoming Budget and Assembly session. He further assured that genuine demands would be addressed and resolved in a phased manner.

JKLCU remembered Mother Teresa on her Death Anniversary.

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate who dedicated her life to helping the poor and destitute in Kolkata. Her Death Anniversary is also globally observed as the International Day of Charity. Mother Teresa died on September 5, 1997, at the age of 87 in Kolkata, India.

A delegation from Chenani, Udhampur, Ramnagar & Majalta met the DC Udhampur and submitted a memorandum regarding pending salaries and other demands.

President Mission Statehood, Sh. Sunil Dimple, has urged Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor Sh. Manoj Sinha and Hon’ble Chief Minister Sh. Omar Abdullah to take immediate steps for the welfare and long-pending demands of Lamberdars and Chowkidars of Jammu & Kashmir.

The key demands include:

🔹 Increase the monthly salaries/honorarium to ₹25,000.

🔹 Regularisation of all Lamberdars and Chowkidars and provision of permanent jobs.

🔹 Introduction of pension schemes for serving and retired Lamberdars and Chowkidars.

🔹 Free transport facilities for Lamberdars and Chowkidars while performing official duties.

🔹 Provision of lockers/secure storage facilities for safe keeping of official records and documents.

🔹 Supply of necessary stationery and official materials required for carrying out their duties.

🔹 Creation of additional posts of Lamberdars and Chowkidars wherever required according to population and administrative needs.

🔹 Recognition and strengthening of the role of Lamberdars and Chowkidars in grassroots administration.

Lamberdars and Chowkidars have been serving the administration at the grassroots level for decades. Their contribution, responsibilities and services deserve proper recognition, financial security and dignity.

Mission Statehood appeals to the Hon’ble LG and Hon’ble Chief Minister to consider these genuine demands sympathetically and take concrete measures for the welfare of Lamberdars and Chowkidars across Jammu & Kashmir.
