The recruitment drives of J&K Bank, beginning with the 2010 advertisements for Banking Associates and Relationship Executives, have long been marred by allegations of corruption, nepotism, and political interference. What should have been a transparent process to select qualified candidates instead became a breeding ground for bribery and favoritism. Aspirants who cleared written exams and viva voce were often denied appointment orders unless they paid bribes running into lakhs of rupees. One candidate, for instance, was asked to pay ₹3 lakh at the corporate headquarters in Srinagar for his appointment order. His refusal to compromise on integrity cost him the job, which was handed to someone who paid. This incident was not isolated — it symbolized the rot within the system, where merit was sidelined and money dictated opportunity.
Over the years, the scandal deepened. Successive recruitment cycles saw well-qualified candidates rejected while politically connected individuals or those willing to pay bribes were placed in selection lists. In 2018–2019, then Governor Satya Pal Malik revealed that 582 deserving candidates were replaced by relatives of politicians and party workers, exposing the scale of manipulation. By 2025, the Crime Branch Kashmir filed chargesheets against individuals who issued fake appointment orders, defrauding job seekers of large sums. Parallel controversies like the Khidmat Centre scheme added to the disillusionment, where professionals were promised absorption into the bank but left debt-ridden when those promises collapsed.
The failure of successive governments to dig deeper into these recruitments has left a trail of broken dreams. For thousands of aspirants, J&K Bank’s recruitment became synonymous with betrayal, eroding trust in one of the region’s most vital financial institutions. The scandal is not just about jobs lost, but it is about the collapse of meritocracy, the misuse of public trust, and the systemic corruption that continues to haunt Jammu & Kashmir’s youth. Until a transparent investigation is carried out and accountability enforced, the J&K Bank recruitment saga will remain a cautionary tale of how institutions can be hollowed out by greed and influence.
