ITER-India, IPR ITER is a joint collaboration by seven members viz. ITER-India is the Indian domestic agency contributing to the ITER project

EU, India, Japan, China, Russia, South Korea and US to prove the feasibility of nuclear fusion for power production. ITER was originally a collaborative project between the four partners : the European Union, Japan, Russian Federation (originally USSR) and the United States. China and South Korea joined ITER in 2003. India formally expressed her interest to join ITER through a letter from Dr. Anil

Kakodkar, Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy (India) to Dr. Achilleas Mitsos, Director General-DG Research, European Commission. In response a technical team from EU and then from ITER visited India, especially to Institute for Plasma Research and other Indian industries for negotiations and assess Indian competence to join ITER. Finally at the final ITER negotiations meeting held at Jeju, Korea on the 6th December, 2005 India was accepted as a full partner in the ITER project. Thus India became the 7th and the latest partner to join ITER. With this more than half of the world’s humanity is involved in this unprecedented scientific and technological endeavour. ITER will be built mostly through in-kind contributions by the seven partners, meaning they will build their share of ITER components through an appropriately formed Domestic Agency (DA) and industries and deliver them to ITER for final assembly of the device.

Modi To Visit ITER Project: प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी अपने फ्रांस दौरे के दौरान दुनिया के सबसे एडवांस्ड फ्यूजन एनर्जी न्यूक्लियर रिएक्टर ITER का निरीक्षण करेंगे। यह प्रोजेक्ट दुनिया के सात सबसे तकनीकी रूप से उन्नत देशों द्वारा मिलकर चलाया जा रहा है, जिसका लक्ष्य पृथ्वी पर एक मिनिएचर सूरज बनाना है। ITER, जिसका पूरा नाम इंटरनेशनल थर्मोन्यूक्लियर एक्सपेरिमेंटल रिएक्टर है, इसमें 'मेड इन इंडिया' की छाप साफ देखी जा सकती है। भारत इस प्रोजेक्ट में लगभग 20,000 करोड़ रुपये (2.5 बिलियन डॉलर) का योगदान दे रहा है और बदले में 100% इंटेलेक्चुअल प्रॉपर्टी का अधिकार प्राप्त करेगा। इससे भविष्य में भारत में भी फ्यूजन एनर्जी रिएक्टर बनाने का रास्ता खुलेगा। ITER अब तक का सबसे महंगा विज्ञान और प्रौद्योगिकी प्रयोग है, जिसमें भारत भागीदार है।

Remembering Professor Kaw,

Predhiman’s critical role in giving clear direction to ITER in its early years is worth mentioning. He was the chairman of the STAC, the ITER’s Science and Technology Advisory Committee. I see STAC as the conscience keeper of ITER, making sure that there is no compromise in the final scientific and technical objectives of ITER. However, to ensure this in ITER, where the politics is even more convoluted than the technology, is a Herculean task. Nevertheless, there is a full realization within the ITER system that Predhiman did a fantastic job resolving many complex STAC issues and helping ITER finalize its technical specifications.
