Fusion in Full Color — A Glimpse Inside the Tokamak

What you’re watching isn’t just beautiful — it’s physics at its most extreme.
This is a plasma pulse inside the ST40 tokamak at Tokamak Energy, captured at 16,000 frames per second.

Each pulse lasts only 0.2 seconds, yet within that brief interval, matter is propelled to temperatures surpassing those of the Sun’s core. The visible pink glow observed originates from the plasma’s cooler periphery. Concurrently, the core, characterized by millions of degrees of heat, remains imperceptible to the human eye due to its emission of radiation within the X-ray spectrum.

Midway through the shot, lithium is introduced into the plasma. As it interacts, it first glows red when excited, then shifts to green as it becomes ionized (Li → Li⁺), revealing the helical magnetic confinement field lines that define the tokamak’s path.

From an engineering standpoint, this footage offers a rare visualization of:
-Magnetic confinement symmetry — the invisible architecture that holds plasma together.
-Impurity transport and edge plasma behavior are both critical to minimizing erosion on plasma-facing components.
-The promise of lithium wall conditioning is a key innovation to improve plasma stability and reduce recycling losses.

Fusion remains one of the grand challenges of modern materials and energy engineering — a domain where plasma physics, metallurgy, cryogenics, and magnetic design converge.

Every pulse brings us a step closer to sustained fusion power — a clean, limitless energy source built on the same principles that light the stars.

Fusion Energy: From “30 Years Away” to 22 Minutes Today

For decades, there’s been an old joke in science and engineering circles:
“Fusion is always 30 years away.”

But on September 15, 2025, France pushed that horizon closer than ever—by keeping its fusion reactor running for 22 minutes, setting a new world record.

This was achieved with the WEST Tokamak, an experimental reactor in Cadarache. While 22 minutes may sound small compared to the scale of our global energy needs, in the world of plasma physics, this is monumental.

💡 Why this matters:
Fusion is the same process that powers the sun—clean, abundant, and carbon-free.
Sustaining plasma stability for tens of minutes is a giant leap from the seconds-long attempts of the past.
It shows we’re moving from theory to demonstration, laying the foundation for commercial fusion power.

The joke about fusion being “forever 30 years away” may not hold for much longer. Each milestone brings us closer to turning star power into a practical reality here on Earth.

One day, instead of laughing at the old saying, we might look back and realize: the future of energy arrived faster than we thought.

Modi To Visit ITER Project:

🛠️Preparation activity is ongoing for the two giant toroidal field coils that were recently delivered to ITERl! On each component, preparatory work must be accomplished before the coils are transferred to the upending tool in the Assembly Hall to be lifted to vertical and installed on the wings of the sub-sector assembly tools.
