As per the direction of the Secretary, Fisheries Department, Government of Sikkim, approximately 500 Chocolate Mahseer seeds of various sizes, ranging from fingerlings to yearlings, were procured from a hatchery at B**g B***y, Kalimpong, and successfully stocked at the Government Carp Farm, Makha, on 21st August 2026.
The stock will be reared and maintained at the farm with the long-term objective of developing broodstock for future breeding and seed production, particularly for ranching and conservation purposes. This is an important initiative of the Fisheries Department towards the conservation and propagation of Chocolate Mahseer, the State Fish of Sikkim.
During the visit, the District Head, Gangtok District, was accompanied by Block Officers, Fisheries Guards (FGs), Head Fisheries Guard (HFG) and Assistant Fisheries Guards (AFGs). The field staff also interacted with the hatchery owner and gained valuable insights into the challenges associated with the breeding, seed production and rearing of Chocolate Mahseer.
A significant step towards conserving Sikkim's precious aquatic biodiversity and strengthening future efforts for the propagation of our State Fish. 🐟🌿

Departmental Coordination Meeting Held

A Departmental Coordination Meeting of the Fisheries Department was held on 18 August 2026 at Golden Jubilee Hall, Matsya Bhawan, under the chairmanship of the Secretary, Fisheries Department. The meeting was attended by senior officers from the Department Headquarters and Districts, officers from the Engineering Cell, Administration and Accounts Sections. The meeting reviewed the physical and financial progress of departmental activities, ongoing construction works, fish seed production and mortality reporting, maintenance of feed log books, and progress of the Organic Fisheries Clusters. Detailed discussions were also held on PMMSY implementation, including timelines for completion of pending beneficiary-oriented activities. The meeting further reviewed MMMUY implementation as well as various financial, administrative and establishment matters requiring timely follow-up and action.

Fisheries Department,Gyalshing District.
The Assistant Director Mr. Lahang Limboo, Fisheries Department Gyalshing District, visited the Office of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Yuksam, to discuss the pending matter concerning the PMMSY scheme defaulter, Mr. Sen Hang S***a. During the meeting, the SDM, Yuksam, assured that necessary steps would be taken to address the matter and arrive at an appropriate resolution.
Following the meeting, the Assistant Director visited the Yuksam Trout Farm, where the farm staff were working on cleaning the raceways, segregating brooders and infected trout as part of the ongoing efforts to maintain proper hygiene and improve the overall condition of the farm.

Conservation-cum-Patrolling Drive Conducted in Gangtok District

Gangtok | 16 August 2026

The field staff of the Fisheries Department, Gangtok District, conducted a conservation-cum-patrolling drive across key river stretches, including Resh*thang (Ranipool), Singtam Confluences, Ranikhola up to the Tunnel/32 Mile, and River View below Saramsa.

During the patrolling, illegal fishing activities were detected at Singtam Confluences and River View below Saramsa. Necessary action was taken by the field staff in accordance with the applicable fisheries regulations.

The drive forms part of the Department’s continued efforts to protect and conserve aquatic biodiversity, safeguard fish resources and promote responsible and sustainable fishing practices across the district.

Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Planning Department Visits Menmoitso Trout Farm

Gangtok, 7 August 2026: Shri M. T. Sherpa, Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Planning Department, Government of Sikkim, visited the Menmoitso Trout Farm today to review the status of developmental activities under the Vibrant Village Programme (VVP).

He was accompanied by senior officers from the Planning Department, Additional District Collector (Gangtok), Divisional Forest Officer, and other officials from the Forest Department. The visiting team was received by the Additional Director, Assistant Director-cum-District Head, Gangtok, Assistant Engineer, and other officers of the Fisheries Department.

During the visit, the Assistant Director cm Dist Head informed the delegation that no project has yet been implemented by the Fisheries Department under the Vibrant Village Programme in the district. However, a detailed briefing was given on the ongoing Rainbow Trout Broodbank project being established at Menmoitso under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). The delegation also inspected the farm infrastructure and the ongoing activities.

Namchi
Two day Riverine Conservation and Patrolling Duty
Location: Rinzi Khola and Birdhang ,Sikkip ,Namchi District
As part of routine surveillance, Fisheries Officials of Namchi District conducted patrolling along Rinzi Khola and Birdhang Khola, Sikkip on 28th &29th July 2026.During the inspection, a JCB was found engaged in excavation work in the vicinity of the river. The operators were advised not to operate or place heavy machinery within the water body to prevent adverse impacts on the aquatic habitat and Fishery resources. Further, the operators and local persons present were informed about the safety measures concerning fishermen and were instructed to refrain from any fishing activities in the area until further notice, in accordance with the advisory issued by the LR&DM Dept.
On the second day, the patrol team observed no incidents of illegal fishing or other violations in the river .

Gyalshing District -
Dated: 29/07/2026, Department of Fisheries, Gyalshing District conducted Fish Farmers Meet at Uttarey, Simphok today in the presence of Deputy Director Shri. Duchen Lepcha, Mr. Rakesh Pradhan (AFG), Mr. Sonam Paljor Sherpa (AFG) and the fish farmers of Maneybong Uttarey block.
During the session many important schemes viz. PMMKSSY, KCC, MMMUY, Aquaculture Insurance etc. under Fisheries Department were briefly discussed by Shri. Duchen Lepcha. Also, many queries about the aquaculture management, marketing, insurence were discussed with the farmers.
The water testing kits were also distributed to all the farmers along with it's demonstrations.
Later, Shri. Duchen Lepcha visited the recreational project site of Mr. Sweden S***a at Kumuk, Yamtar to inspect the ongoing work process status.
Then he also visited BADP project site at Simphok and inspected about the work status of the project.

Pakyong, 20th July 2026

Fisheries Department, Pakyong District Conducts Capacity-Building Training for Subordinate Uniform Staff

The Fisheries Department, Pakyong District, organized a one-day training programme for its subordinate uniform staff on 20th July 2026 at the Community Centre, Pakyong, with the objective of strengthening discipline, professionalism and adherence to official protocol.

The training programme was conducted by ASI Santosh Kumar Basnett, Pakyong PS, who delivered comprehensive sessions on the importance of discipline, proper wearing and maintenance of the official uniform, correct methods of saluting senior officers and the standard procedures to be followed during pipping ceremonies.

During the session, ASI Basnett emphasized punctuality, professional conduct, respect for the chain of command and the significance of maintaining a smart, disciplined and dignified appearance while on duty. Practical demonstrations on proper saluting techniques, uniform etiquette, and pipping ceremony procedures were also conducted to ensure that all personnel gained a thorough understanding of the prescribed protocols.

The training was attended by Block Officers, Head Fisheries Guards, Assistant Fisheries Guards of the department.

The training proved to be highly informative and beneficial, enhancing the confidence, discipline, and professionalism of the subordinate uniform staff. Such capacity-building initiatives reaffirm the Fisheries Department’s commitment to fostering a disciplined, efficient and service-oriented workforce capable of upholding the highest standards of public service and conservation duty.

The 6th Meeting of the State Level Monitoring and Approval Committee (SLAMC) under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) was convened on 20th July 2026 at the Golden Jubilee Hall, Matsya Bhawan, Gangtok, under the chairmanship of the Principal Director, Fisheries Department. The meeting reviewed the progress of PMMSY implementation in Sikkim, deliberated on the proposal for establishment of a Trout Fish Farm at Sarchok, Lachung under the Vibrant Village Programme, and discussed the development of two Amrit Sarovars in the State. Following detailed deliberations, the committee provided valuable suggestions for strengthening fisheries development and ensuring timely implementation of the proposed projects.
