A productive Farmers’ Meet was successfully conducted at the Fish Farm-cum-Anglers Hut in Sikkip, organized in close collaboration with the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA). The program brought together the farming communities of Lamaten Tingmoo GPU and Wok Omchu GPU to discuss fisheries development in their area. The session was graced by Shri Ugen Tseten Bhutia, Assistant Director of Fisheries Namchi, Smt. Nirmala Thapa, Block Officer, and Shri Barun Rai, Inspector from the Agriculture Department.

During the interactive session, the attending farmers were thoroughly educated on the various Central and State Government schemes available to support their livelihoods like PMMSY, MMMUY Additionally, officials provided an extensive overview of the technical aspects of fish farming to help local growers optimize their management practices and yield. The program concluded with a comprehensive joint site inspection in Lower Omchu to evaluate potential locations for future fisheries activities and expansion in the region.

The Department of Fisheries, Namchi District successfully conducted the 'One Day at School' awareness programme at New Secondary School, Namchi. Assistant Director Ugen Tseten Bhutia, along with Block Officer Nirmala Thapa, led the educational session for the students.
​The programme focused on educating the students about the rich aquatic biodiversity of our state, with special emphasis on the indigenous fishes of Sikkim. Students learned about the ecological roles of these native species and the urgent need for their conservation to protect our natural water bodies.
​In addition to environmental conservation, the session highlighted the growing potential of the fisheries sector. The students were made aware of the various educational and career pathways available in fisheries science, aquaculture management, and public service, encouraging them to consider this vital field for their professional future.

Conservation efforts continue along the Rolu, Kitam, and Melli river belts. Fishery team comprising of Block Officers Nirmala Thapa, Punama Gurung and B. B Rai, FG patrolled theareas to monitor aquatic biodiversity and ensure no illegal fishing was taking place, reporting a successful drive with zero unlawful incidents. In preparation for the monsoon season, the team also emphasized public safety by raising awareness about the dangers of rapidly rising river levels. Fisheries Department, Namchi urges everyone to prioritize safety and stay away from river side during this high-risk period.

A Field verification was conducted by Tshering Doma Bhutia, Fisheries Guard at Lower Chemchey for identification of potential area for Fish Farming.
During the inspection, assessment was conducted on general condition and suitability of the area such as basic water parameter checking including water temperature measurement.
Preliminary observations indicate that the site is feasible for possible fisheries related activities as it has an adequate water source.

A joint inspection was conducted at Chirbirey, near Jorethang, to assess the feasibility of transforming the area into a fishing hotspot focused on conservation and local economic empowerment. The delegation was led by Dr. Karma Doma Bhutia, Additional Director from the Fisheries Department, alongside the SDM (Jorethang), and the DFO (T) Namchi.

The initiative aims to create sustainable income opportunities for local stakeholders. As a primary phase of development, the site will host an upcoming angling competition. The Forest Department has pledged full support to ensure the event's success. Additionally, existing Tourism Department infrastructure at Chirbirey will be refurbished and utilized for the event.

Discussions also addressed logistical requirements, specifically the provision of an alternate access road from the main highway to the site. The inspection concluded successfully, with representatives from the Tourism Department, District Heads of Fisheries (Pakyong and Gangtok), the Sikkim Anglers Association, and the Namchi Fisheries Department—committing to full inter-departmental cooperation.

An awareness programme-cum-field visit was conducted at Kholaghari on 13th May 2026. During the programme, the local people were made aware of the past as well as upcoming schemes of the department. They were also informed about trout and carp farming practices, including basic culture techniques, pond management, and the scope of fish farming as a livelihood activity.
Field survey activities were also carried out during the visit, where the suitability of land and water quality parameters were examined for potential fish farming activities. The interaction session allowed the villagers to clarify their queries regarding fisheries-related schemes and fish culture practices.
