Earlier today, I met the students of PM Shri Sir Tashi Namgyal Senior Secondary School, led by their coach, Shri Francis Gurung, and Manager, Shri Prem Chettri, at my official residence.

The young footballers will be travelling to New Delhi to participate in the prestigious Subroto International Cup (U-17). I extended my best wishes to the entire team and encouraged them to play with confidence, discipline and determination.

Their participation at the national level is a proud moment for Sikkim, and I am confident that they will give their very best and make our State proud. Wishing the team every success for the tournament and a memorable journey ahead.

Met the young footballers from Sikkim who have been shortlisted to represent our State at the Dr. T. Ao Junior Girls’ National Football Championship 2026–27, scheduled to be held in Narainpur, Chhattisgarh, from 15th to 23rd September 2026.

With 20 promising players and a dedicated team of officials, this is a proud moment for Sikkim and a testament to the growing strength of women’s football in our State. I extend my best wishes to all the players, coaches and support staff as they prepare to take on the national stage.

I am confident that our young footballers will play with determination, discipline and team spirit, carrying the pride of Sikkim with them. Wishing Team Sikkim every success and a memorable championship ahead.

Sunday on Cycle Race Successfully Concluded

The Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Government of Sikkim, successfully concluded the “Sunday on Cycle” event at the White Hall Sports Complex on 30th August 2026, as part of the Celebration of National Sports Day 2026 – 29 Challenges.

The event was graced by Hon’ble Minister for Sports, Shri Raju Basnet, as the Chief Guest, with Shri Rinzing Wangyal Chopel, Chairperson, SSDB, as the Special Guest.

The programme witnessed the presence and active participation of the Secretary, PCE, CE, Directors, Joint Directors, Assistant Directors, officials and staff of the Sports & Youth Affairs Department.

The cycling race, which was flagged off from Resh*thang Sports Complex, concluded successfully at White Hall Sports Complex, with enthusiastic participation from cyclists and sports enthusiasts.

The event reflected the Department’s continued commitment towards promoting fitness, cycling, healthy lifestyles and greater participation in sports among the people of Sikkim.

Together, let us pedal towards a healthier, fitter and more active Sikkim!

National Sports Day Celebration 2026 Paljor Stadium, Gangtok

The Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Government of Sikkim, commemorated National Sports Day 2026 on 29th August 2026 at Paljor Stadium, Gangtok, with great enthusiasm and participation from the State’s sporting fraternity.

The programme was graced by Hon’ble Minister, Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Shri Raju Basnet, as the Chief Guest, along with Hon’ble MLA, 27-Gangtok & Advisor, UDD Department, Shri Delay Namgyal Barfungpa, as the Guest of Honour.

The occasion was further honoured by the presence of Special Guest Mayor, Gangtok Municipal Corporation, Smt. Tshering Palden Bhutia, Deputy Mayor, GMC, Smt. Sara Lama, Advisor, SYAD, Shri Bikram Pradhan, Chairperson, SSDB, Shri Rinzing Wangyal Chopel, Chairperson, SYDB, Shri Basant Yonzon, and President, SOA, along with Presidents and General Secretaries of various Sports Associations.

The celebration witnessed the presence of eminent sportspersons, who have brought pride and recognition to Sikkim through their dedication and achievements in the field of sports.

The programme included a tribute to Major Dhyan Chand, a presentation on the significance of National Sports Day and the achievements of Sikkim’s sportspersons, Zumba and One-Mile Run, distribution of Cash Incentives to Medal-Winning Sportspersons, felicitation of sports promoters, and a series of engaging sports activities and exhibition matches.

The event was also attended by the Secretary, PCE, Special Secretary,Directors, ACE, Joint Directors, Deputy Directors, Assistant Directors, officers and staff of the Sports & Youth Affairs Department, who contributed towards the successful conduct of the celebration.

National Sports Day is a reminder of the power of sports to inspire, unite and empower. The Department remains committed to nurturing sporting talent and creating greater opportunities for the youth of Sikkim.

Let us celebrate the spirit of sports, honour our champions and inspire the next generation.

Site Visit for Proposed District Stadium – Pakyong District

The proposed site for the District Stadium in Pakyong District was inspected during a site visit led by the respected Secretary, Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Government of Sikkim, along with the DE and AE of the Engineering Section and officers from the District Office.

The visit focused on assessing the proposed site and reviewing the feasibility and requirements for the development of sports infrastructure in the district. The team also held discussions on the necessary technical and developmental aspects to ensure that the proposed stadium meets the sporting needs of the district and provides quality facilities for athletes and the community.

The Department remains committed to strengthening sports infrastructure across Sikkim and creating better opportunities for the youth and sporting fraternity.

Sikkim Shooting Team Send-Off Ceremony for 13th NE Zonal Shooting Championship

The Sikkim R***e Association organised a formal Send-Off Ceremony for the Sikkim Shooting Team participating in the 13th North East Zonal Shooting Championship, Assam.

The programme was held at the Chamber of the Hon’ble Chairperson, State Sports Development Board (SSDB), Shri Rinzing Wangyal Chopel, in the presence of officials and representatives of the Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Government of Sikkim.

The programme included a brief presentation on the Sikkim R***e Association, highlighting its activities, achievements and contribution towards the promotion and development of shooting sports in the State. Shooters’ IDs were also distributed to the participating athletes.

The Hon’ble Chairperson, Shri Rinzing Wangyal Chopel, addressed the gathering and motivated the athletes, encouraging them to perform with dedication, discipline and confidence while representing Sikkim at the zonal level.

Shri Sanjay Budhathoki, President, Sikkim R***e Association, also addressed the gathering and shared key statistics and information regarding the Association and its athletes.

The Sikkim Shooting Team comprises 11 shooters, including 6 women shooters, who will represent the State at the 13th NE Zonal Shooting Championship in Assam.

Also present on the occasion were the Secretary, Chief Accounts Officer and Assistant Director from the Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Government of Sikkim.

The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks, extending best wishes to the entire Sikkim Shooting Team for a successful and commendable performance at the championship.
