Plastic Freedom Challenge 2026 (Aug 8-15)

Sikkim Eco Club Schools are actively participating in the Plastic Freedom Challenge 2026 (August 8-15). Eco Club members, along with Nodal Teachers are conducting cleanlup drives followed by Waste & Brand Audits around school campuses. Awareness programmes on the environmental impacts of single-use plastics are also being conducted regularly. Students are being encouraged to reduce plastic use and adopt sustainable, eco-friendly alternatives in their daily lives and spread the message in community.

Environment Education Programme Conducts Hands-on Workshop on Waste and Brand Audit for 25 schools of Gangtok District

Gangtok, 7 August 2026: Environment Education Programme (EEP) under Forest and Environment Department, Government of Sikkim, with support from Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Government of India, and in partnership with Zero Waste Himalaya successfully organised a Hands-on Workshop on Zero Waste Initiative: Waste and Brand Audit for 25 schools of Gangtok District at PMSHRI Government Girls’ Senior Secondary School, Deorali, on 7 August 2026.

The workshop was conducted also pre celebrating Zero Waste Himalaya Day (August 8th) introducing yet another edition of The Plastic Freedom Challenge to be observed from August 8-15 celebrating Independence Day with sustainable and environment friendly actions. The event also aligned with Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) initiative with the objective of promoting sustainable waste management practices and creating awareness among students about responsible environmental behaviour.

The core members of ZWH Dr Roshan Rai and Priyadarsheeni Shrestha introduced students and teachers to the concept of Waste and Brand Audit, enabling them to understand different types of waste, identify brands contributing to plastic waste, and recognise the importance of waste reduction and segregation. About 80 participating teachers and students were actively involved in segregating waste into different categories during the practical session, providing them with hands-on experience in proper waste management and reinforcing the principles of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle following the Zero Waste Mantra of Reflect-Switch-Demand.

The interactive session encouraged students to adopt environmentally responsible practices in their daily lives and inspired them to become active participants and ambassadors in the Zero Waste Himalaya movement.

Bagless Day at Rumtek Senior Secondary School! 🌿🧹

The Eco Club of Rumtek Senior Secondary School observed Bagless Day with a cleanliness drive across the school campus and surrounding premises. Students enthusiastically came together to promote cleanliness, teamwork, and environmental responsibility, proving that learning extends beyond the classroom.

Sikkim Eco-Club Schools observed Global Tiger Day on 29th July 2026 under the theme "Save the Tiger." An awareness talk was delivered on the importance of Tigers and wild animals in maintaining ecological balance. Students actively participated in drawing (painting) and mask-making competitions, showcasing their creativity and spreading the message of wildlife conservation. The programme successfully encouraged students to protect biodiversity and conserve wildlife for future generations.

World Environment Day 2026 was observed with great enthusiasm by Sikkim Eco-Club Schools under the Environment Education Programme (EEP). The celebration was conducted under the theme "Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future." to promote environmental awareness and encourage climate action among students.

Above 850 Sikkim Eco-Club Schools actively participated in the observance across the state. As part of the celebration, schools took part in the "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" plantation drive. Students, parents, and teachers planted saplings within school premises and surrounding areas as a symbol of their commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable living.

The celebration served as a meaningful platform to inspire young minds to become responsible environmental stewards and contribute towards building a greener and more sustainable future.

June 5, 2026 | JN Road Gangtok: CELEBRATING WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2026: SIKKIM IN ACTION! 🌱

In observance of World Environment Day 2026, the EIACP Cell, Forest and Environment Department, Government of Sikkim, facilitated a large-scale environmental awareness and action programme along the JN Road corridor from 2nd Mile to 5th Mile, Gangtok. The event witnessed the enthusiastic participation of around 500 individuals, including the Hon'ble Minister for Forest and Environment, Hon'ble Department Advisors, Hon'ble Chairman, Panchayat representatives, forestry personnel, students, local residents, and members of the media. As part of the celebrations, a massive avenue plantation drive was undertaken under the flagship initiatives Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam and Mero Bato Mero Bot, during which approximately 600 indigenous cherry saplings were planted along strategic stretches of JN Road to strengthen the region's green cover and create eco-friendly corridors for future generations.

The programme also featured an intensive roadside cleanliness drive, where participants collectively removed litter and waste from the highway, reinforcing the message of a clean and sustainable Sikkim. Recognizing the importance of responsible tourism, the EIACP Cell also conducted targeted awareness activities for tourists and commuters by distributing garbage bags to tourist vehicles, pasting informative stickers carrying the message “Sikkim – The Green State of India” on commercial and private vehicles, and engaging visitors through on-the-spot sensitization on eco-friendly travel practices. The event successfully transformed environmental awareness into community action, demonstrating Sikkim's commitment towards climate action, sustainable living, and environmental stewardship. Through collective participation and meaningful interventions, the programme reinforced the message that
protecting the environment is a shared responsibility and a vital investment in the future of the state.
