Release of the Report on โ€œFloating Solar PV Potential Assessment of Indiaโ€

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) released the report titled โ€œSolar PV Potential Assessment of India (Floating Solar)โ€ at MNRE, New Delhi.

The report was released by Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Shri Pralhad Joshi in the presence of senior officials from MNRE, NISE, and the Military Engineering Services (MES).

Prepared by NISE, the report presents Indiaโ€™s first comprehensive national assessment of floating solar photovoltaic (FSPV) potential using advanced geospatial analysis and multi-criteria screening methods. By integrating data on water bodies, bathymetry, solar resources, infrastructure proximity, and technical suitability, the study estimates a Floating Solar PV Potential of 102.18 GW across suitable water bodies in India.

The assessment was carried out by the Solar Energy Research and Analytics Laboratory, NISE, under the guidance of Dr. Mohammad Rihan, Director General, NISE. Key contributors included Dr. Jai Prakash Singh, Dr. Anish Malan, and Dr. Sandeep Kumar Singh, who developed the geospatial methodology, data integration framework, analytics, and nationwide assessment process.

The report serves as an evidence-based resource for policymakers, state agencies, developers, investors, researchers, and other stakeholders. It supports strategic planning and accelerated deployment of floating solar projects across India.

The report highlights floating solar as a sustainable complement to ground-mounted solar installations, contributing to efficient land use, water conservation, grid integration, and achievement of Indiaโ€™s clean energy goals.

The release marks an important milestone in Indiaโ€™s renewable energy journey and reinforces NISEโ€™s commitment to supporting national energy planning through scientific research, innovation, and technical excellence.
