The basin-wide technical consultation for the development of the Barak River Basin Management Plan successfully took place on September 30, 2026, at the Brahmaputra Board(HQ) under the chairmanship of Dr. Ranbir Singh, Chairman, Brahmaputra Board. Held in collaboration with the India-EU Water Initiative (IEWI)/GIZ as part of the Third Technical Mission, the meeting brought together key participants including representatives and technical officials from the six Barak Basin States (Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura), relevant central agencies such as the Central Water Commission (CWC), Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC), National Institute of Technology Silchar (NIT Silchar), and India Meteorological Department (IMD), alongside the EU Expert Team/IAMHYDRO and GIZ India/IEWI. Discussions during the consultation focused on transitioning from basin characterization to risk assessment by developing a common approach for the Barak River Basin, evaluating the methodology, criteria, indicators, and threshold values associated with the five previously identified Key Water Management Issues (KWMIs)—namely altered sediment regime, flood risk and runoff dynamics, seasonal water scarcity, groundwater level decline, and surface water quality deterioration.
