STF, Assam Apprehends Three Drug Traffickers; 400 Grams of He**in Recovered

STF, Assam intercepted a Renault Triber (AS 01EL 7756) at Sonkochi Path, Beharbari, Guwahati, during the night of 27/28 August 2026, and recovered 37 soap cases containing 397 grams (net) of suspected he**in.

Three persons—Kiron Singha (49), Cachar; S. Nengpi Vaiphei (36), Imphal East; and Ngaineichong (41), Churachandpur, Manipur—were apprehended.

Following leads from earlier arrests in STF P.S. Case No. 06/2026, STF, Assam, jointly with Hailakandi District Police, apprehended Fazal Islam Barbhuiyan (21), an alleged operative of the Pakistan-based Shahzad Bhatti Network (SBN), from Ramnathpur, Hailakandi, in the early hours of 26 August 2026.

With this apprehension, the total number of arrests has risen to four (04), with the earlier three arrests made from Dhubri, Chirang and Barpeta districts.

𝐒𝐓𝐅, 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐦 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐓𝐰𝐨 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐈𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐓𝐮𝐬𝐤𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐓𝐚𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐩𝐮𝐫

Acting on reliable intelligence, the Special Task Force (STF), Assam conducted an operation on the night of 7 August 2026 at Bangalipara, Tamulpur, and apprehended Gwhwm Basumatary (29) and Swdwbma Badimatary (23), both residents of Tamulpur.
The STF team recovered two elephant ivory tusks weighing 2.09 kg and 1.97 kg, with a combined weight of about 4 kg. Preliminary enquiry revealed that the accused were allegedly attempting to sell the ivory for approximately ₹6 lakh.

STF, Assam has continued its stern and lawful action against economic offenders by arresting three more persons from Kolkata, West Bengal, in connection with two GST/ITC fraud cases.

Vineet Kumar Poddar has been arrested in connection with STF P.S. Case No. 02/2026, while Vivek Kumar Gupta and Surajit Barman have been arrested in connection with STF P.S. Case No. 05/2026.
With these arrests, the total number of accused apprehended in the two cases has risen to twelve (12).

On 24 July 2026, STF, Assam conducted a coordinated operation in connection with STF P.S. Case No. 06/2026 against active members of the Pakistan-based and ISI-linked Shahzad Bhatti Network (SBN).

Three persons were apprehended from Dhubri, Chirang and Barpeta:
1) Akramul Islam (26), Dhubri
2) Aminur Rahman (22), Chirang
3) Abdul Hussain (54), Barpeta

Acting on specific intelligence, STF, Assam, with the assistance of Chirang Police, conducted a successful operation during the intervening night of 19th and 20th June, 2026 and apprehended nine wildlife traffickers while rescuing eight Golden Langurs from Bamungaon Road under Sidli Police Station, Chirang district.
The rescued Golden Langurs are an endangered species notified under Schedule-I of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, with an estimated black market value of around Rs. 16 lakh.
During the operation, two vehicles, thirteen mobile phones and incriminating documents were also seized.

🚨 STF Assam Cracks Down on Fake ITC Syndicate

Acting on a complaint from the State GST Department, STF Assam conducted coordinated operations in Guwahati, Kolkata and Patna on the night of 14–15 June 2026, leading to the apprehension of 8 persons.

Investigation has uncovered fraudulent availment of Input Tax Credit worth ₹21.06 crore during FY 2021–22 to 2025–26, with the total liability, including interest and penalty, estimated at ₹47.71 crore.

The racket involved the use of fake invoices and bogus e-way bills without any actual supply or movement of goods.

Further investigation is underway to dismantle the larger network and prevent substantial loss of GST revenue to the Government exchequer.
