Fresh Violence Reported in Kangpokpi District; Three Dead in Clash at Loibal Khullen

Kangpokpi, Manipur: Fresh violence was reported in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district in the early hours of the morning after an alleged armed attack at Loibol Khullen village left three people dead and several others injured, according to local reports.

The incident reportedly occurred at around 4:00 am when members of the Kuki Liberation Army (KLA) allegedly launched an attack on cadres associated with the Kuki National Front (P) (KNF-P). Authorities have not yet issued an official statement confirming the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to reports, three individuals lost their lives in the violence. The deceased have been identified as Letkhongam Haokip, son of Manglun; Tinmary Haokip, wife of Letkhongam Haokip; and Jangminlal Haokip, son of Seikhohao Haokip.

Several other individuals are also reported to have sustained injuries. The injured were shifted to nearby medical facilities for treatment, although the exact number of casualties has not yet been officially confirmed.

Following the incident, security forces were deployed to the area and additional reinforcements were reportedly rushed to prevent further escalation. Authorities have cordoned off the affected locality and launched search operations in and around Loibol Khullen.

Officials are closely monitoring the situation, while movement in and around the village has been restricted as a precautionary measure.

Community leaders and civil society organisations have appealed for calm and urged all concerned parties to exercise restraint. Authorities have also requested the public to avoid spreading rumours and to rely on verified information as investigations continue.

Emergency Shutdown Declared Across Zeliangrong Region Over Six Missing Naga Civilians

The Joint Tribes Council-Manipur (JTC-Manipur) has announced an immediate and total emergency shutdown across the Zeliangrong region, covering Inpui, Liangmai, Rongmei, and Zeme inhabited areas, citing concerns over six missing Naga civilians and opposition to the reported release of 14 Kuki detainees.

In a statement issued through its Media and Publicity Wing on June 1, the organisation said the decision was taken following developments related to a reported request from the Manipur Government and a subsequent decision by the United Naga Council (UNC) concerning the proposed release of 14 Kuki detainees or refugees while the whereabouts of six missing Naga civilians remain unknown.

According to JTC-Manipur, the six civilians were allegedly abducted on May 13, 2026, during the ongoing crisis. The organisation further alleged that individuals from Leilon Veiphei Kuki Village, along with illegal armed elements, were involved in the incident.

The council stated that the continued uncertainty surrounding the missing civilians, now entering its third week, has generated widespread concern among community members. It argued that the proposed release of the 14 detainees before the return of the six civilians would be unjust and could negatively impact efforts to secure their safe release.

As part of the emergency shutdown, JTC-Manipur announced a series of restrictions across affected areas. These include the suspension of business activities along national highways, closure of educational institutions and government offices, suspension of banking services, and restrictions on public transport and public gatherings until further notice.

The organisation has placed several demands before the authorities, including:

* Immediate tracing and safe release of the six missing Naga civilians.
* Continued detention of the 14 Kuki detainees until the missing civilians are returned.
* A thorough investigation into alleged links between detainees and armed groups.
* Accountability from the government regarding its handling of the situation.

JTC-Manipur also appealed to the public to cooperate with the shutdown and support the movement, stating that collective action was necessary to draw attention to the issue.

Meanwhile, the United Naga Council (UNC) has reportedly cancelled the proposed release of the 14 Kuki detainees, which had earlier been scheduled for 2:00 PM on June 1. In a declaration issued on Sunday, the council stated that the decision was taken after considering the prevailing sentiments and concerns expressed by members of the Naga community.

The development highlights the continuing tensions surrounding the issue of missing civilians and detainees, with community organisations calling for humanitarian solutions and the safe return of all individuals involved.
