Manipur was a sovereign kingdom from 1445 BC till 27th April, 1891. Manipur lost sovereignty to the British following the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891 to 1947. Manipur regained sovereignty on 15th August, 1947 when the British created the dominion of India and Pakistan. But Manipur was merged to India on 15th October 1949. Manipur is a hillock valley state surrounded by nine mountain ranges and is
connected to the mainland India through the worst terrible terrain by three National Highway –150, 39 and 53 and Airways connection and to the neighboring country of Myanmar by NH - 39. For many years, Manipuris are struggling for its survival and looking for new and innovative systems as a solution for its socio economic problems prevailing in the region which is stubbornly resistant to local and national policy measures because of the complex intersection of structural factors and socioeconomic exclusion. The role of Civil Society Organization and NGOs, in this context, is very important and great. We cannot left the government alone to solve the multifaceted problems which are resistant to government policies and programs. Civil society organizations need to influence and cooperate the government from time to time to solve these chronic problems of poverty, economic opportunities, infrastructures and social economic injustice regarding its right and opportunities.
