• The Aravalli Range is ecologically critical as it helps recharge groundwater, prevent desertification, maintain biodiversity, and protect large areas from dust storms and climate extremes.
• On November 20, 2025, the Supreme Court accepted a new uniform definition: only landforms rising at least 100 metres above local ground level (including slopes and adjacent land) count as “Aravalli Hills.”
• The Court directed the central government to prepare a “Management Plan for Sustainable Mining (MPSM)” for the entire Aravalli and ordered that no new mining leases be granted until this plan is finalised.
• Many environmentalists warn that this new definition could exclude large, lower-height ridges from protection, potentially stripping safeguards from over 90% of the hills that once formed part of the Aravalli system.
• Protecting the Aravalli remains vital as it influences water security, air quality, climate stability, and ecological balance for millions of people across North-West India.
