Meeting on Tawang nagar panchayat held

TAWANG, 2 Apr: A meeting regarding the proposed Tawang nagar panchayat was held at the deputy commissioner’s office here on Thursday.
Chaired by Tawang Deputy Commissioner Namgyal Angmo, the meeting was attended by Zilla Parishad Chairperson Leki Gombu, Kyidphel ZPM Tenzin Monpa, Tawang ZPM Sonam Norzin, Lungla ADC Tashi Dhondup, GBs, PRI members, and other key stakeholders.
Town planner Tani Talo delivered a presentation on the subject via videoconference from Itanagar. The presentation covered key aspects, such as the structure and classification of municipalities under the APMA 2007, the history of municipal governance in Arunachal Pradesh, subjects delegated to urban local bodies (ULBs), funding requirements, expected outcomes, and the proposed municipal boundary for Tawang nagar panchayat.
The proposed nagar panchayat area includes 47 localities. A preliminary notification has already been issued, inviting claims and objections from the public.
It was informed that, as per eligibility criteria, the Tawang nagar panchayat will consist of a minimum of six wards. The DC highlighted that the formation of a ULB would enable better access to funds and improved service delivery. She clarified that existing land rights will remain unchanged, and that the delineation is primarily intended to distinguish urban and rural areas for effective implementation of government schemes.
She added that the nagar panchayat will have between six to 10 elected councillors, representing the people. The body will also have the authority to levy user fees and undertake town planning activities. The areas included in the proposal are already urbanised in nature.
Several participants raised queries related to land rights and legal aspects. The deputy commissioner assured that proper hearings will be conducted before finalisation, once the stipulated period for submission of claims and objections concludes. (DIPRO)
