The final frontier of Indian tourism, virginal Arunachal Pradesh shows up as a giant patch of unexplored green on the country’s map. India’s wildest and least explored state, Arunachal (literally the ‘Land of Dawn-lit Mountains’) rises abruptly from the Assam plains as a mass of densely forested, and impossibly steep, hills, which eventually top off as snow-capped peaks along the Tibetan border. ome to 26 indigenous tribes, Arunachal is perhaps the last sanctuary for India’s natural and anthropological heritage. Much of the state still remains beyond tourism’s reach, but new areas (comprising lush river gorges and craggy mountainscapes) are slowly being opened to visitors.

Jim Ankan Deka and his team travelled to Manmao village in Arunachal Pradesh to meet Phenngi Ronrang and a group of 15 women from the Ronrang community, and to document a beautiful Tangsa folk dance song called “Sapola.”

Performed by Phenngi Ronrang along with the women of the village, Sapola is a prayer song for a good harvest and for the well-being of domestic and wild animals and birds. The song carries a simple yet beautiful wish for a better life for the community and everything that surrounds them.

The song and video were recorded and shot live in Manmao itself, allowing the performance to be captured in the place and among the people where this tradition lives.

Most of the people of Manmao belong to the Ronrang community, a subtribe of the Tangsa community. Experiences like this offer a wonderful opportunity to listen, learn and document the diverse musical traditions of Arunachal Pradesh directly from the communities who carry them.

The team is grateful to Hon’ble MLA Laisam Simai, Lekhandu Thungon, ADC of Jairampur, Mr. D. K. Thongdok, AC of Manmao, and the entire community of Manmao for their warm welcome, encouragement and support.

Manmao village in Arunachal Pradesh gave the Music Malt team another beautiful musical experience. This time, they were there to record “Sawi,” a traditional Tangsa prayer folk song, for the Music Malt Live Session. L Lungtu Musang, a folk artist from Manmao, sang the song at a beautiful natural location, making the whole experience feel raw, adventurous and joyful. Sawi gives importance to the cock’s comb flower (Chungki) and carries prayers for a good harvest. The song and video were recorded and shot live at the location itself.

A big thank you to Hon’ble MLA Laisam Simai, ADC of Jairampur Lekhandu Thungon, AC of Manmao Mr. D. K. Thongdok, ZPM Phenngi Ronrang and everyone in Manmao for welcoming the team so warmly.

Documenting “Lahowa” — a rare Tangsa War Song of the Pangwa Ronrang Community

The Music Malt team lead by Jim Ankan Deka & Tse Ring La recently travelled to Manmao village, Arunachal Pradesh, to document what is believed to be one of the rarest traditional war songs of the Pangwa Ronrang community of the Tangsa people.

The song, “Lahowa,” was recorded live in the village with folk singer and teacher Rangtu Ronrang. Traditionally, the song is associated with the community’s wartime traditions - sung to encourage the men as they leave the village for war and also upon their return after victory. Recording Lahowa in its own cultural setting offers an important opportunity to document and preserve a rare musical tradition of the community.

The team extends its sincere gratitude to Hon’ble MLA -simai, ADC of Jairampur Lekhandu Thungon, AC of Manmao Mr. D. K. Thungdok, public leader Rangreh Ronrang, and the people of Manmao for their warm hospitality and support.

In 1683, a boy was born a few kilometres from Tawang and grew up to become a Dalai Lama who broke every rule of the role, he wrote love poems instead of scripture, drank wine, kept his hair long, and vanished mysteriously at twenty-two. Tibetans still sing his songs today.

That’s the story most people never hear about Tawang. What they do know is the road, one of the highest motorable passes on Earth, a border pass where Indian and Chinese officers still meet face to face, a waterfall crashing straight onto the highway.

But slow down and there’s more. A 700-year-old iron bridge built by the same engineer-monk behind Bhutan’s famous ones. A stupa near the border whose door opens once every twelve years. A café the Indian Army built on top of a decommissioned bridge, run entirely by Monpa women, a river running beneath your table. A 250-year-old stone house in Chug Valley where eight women single-handedly brought a forgotten grain back to the region, one dish at a time.

This is Tawang. Come for the mountains. Stay for the story nobody tells you.
