“While Padma award is a big honour, it means a lot of responsibility as well,” says 70-year-old Chef Damodaran Kothandaraman, lovingly known as Chef Damu, as he receives the prestigious Padma Shri.
A PhD holder in catering science from Madras University and a respected figure in South India’s culinary scene, Chef Damu has been a key pillar of the culinary industry.
As the president of the South India Chef’s Association (SICA), he has spearheaded numerous events and workshops to attract talent and elevate the quality of food in the region.
With 45 years of professional experience, starting with the Taj Mumbai, Chef Damu has built an illustrious career as a chef, author of multiple cookbooks, and faculty member in leading hotel management and catering colleges.
His cookery shows on popular Tamil television channels, including Cooku with Comali, have earned him a massive following and made South Indian cuisine a household name.
Known for his mastery of Chettinadu cuisine, Chennai’s seafood, and traditional Brahmin vegetarian fare, Chef Damu has played a pivotal role in introducing the vibrant flavours of South India to the global stage.
His Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon and his dedication to the craft make him a true culinary legend.
