There has been much debate and criticism on increasing levels of smog and pollution in the otherwise beautiful valley of Kashmir in General and Srinagar city in particular. As per reports the Air Quality Index (AQI) touched the figure 300 in the month of November 2025 which is an alarming figure and cause of serious concern.
I am not an expert on the subject, but out of my experience gathered over a period of more than fifteen years in the valley during my service, I have found the following strong reasons for such phenomenon:-
1. The use of tons of Hardcoke and Charcoal every day for heating purposes by the Security Forces, Public & Private offices and even civilian population appears to be the main reason behind the increasing AQI levels in the valley especially Srinagar city. The Central and UT governments will have to find out some alternate heating arrangements in the valley to give a big relief to the local population and the tourists from all over the world.
2. Burning of decayed Chinar leaves towards the end of Autumn season by local population to prepare coal for Kangris is another strong reason for smoke and pollution thereof. In order to get rid of this problem, a blanket ban has to be ordered by the UT government to bring down the AQI levels.
3. The ever increasing number of vehicles of various types in valley especially the diesel and Petrol run vehicles is yet another strong reason for the pollution. In order to minimise the emission levels the UT government will have to encourage introduction of CNG & purchase of Electric Vehicles in the UT of Jammu & Kashmir especially in the capital cities of Jammu & Srinagar. Other measures to reduce the emission levels may also be considered as is being done in New Delhi.
4. Huge construction activities in the towns have to be regulated to lower the pollution levels by the UT government.
5. Sincere efforts are required to be made by the UT government to increase the otherwise shrinking Green Cover in the whole UT. Plantation drives have to be launched in a big way to maintain the eco-balance.

The restoration of age old Darbar Move practice by the UT government is a welcome step. Frankly speaking the act of stopping of Darbar Move practice on June 30, 2021 by the then dispensation was not liked by the people of Jammu and Kashmir especially the people affiliated with trading and tourism activities. With the revival of this practice the people of two regions will come closer to one another, mutual understanding will definitely improve, there will be an upsurge in the business activity and people will also have better administrative access. The Omar Abdullah government has fulfilled its commitment to restore the Darbar Move practice for which they deserve appreciation.

Some countries are celebrating the Ceasefire agreement between Israel and Palestine. Donald Trump, the whimsical President of United States of America claims to be the main architect and he longs for the prestigious Nobel Prize for stopping wars among various countries including India-Pakistan and the one sided Israel- Palestine war. A large number of countries including some Muslim countries mostly Arabs have also not only welcomed the Ceasefire, but also showered praises on Donald Trump for being instrumental in striking ceasefire agreement.
The whole world has witnessed the destruction and devastation of Gaza Strip right from the month of October 2023 when some mentally sick people belonging to Hamas Group attacked the innocent people in Israeli territory on October 07,2023. Making this incident a strong plea for demolishing Gaza-the Israeli eyesore in a systematic manner Israel fully supported by USA launched heavy attacks on various cities of Gaza including Hospitals, Educational Institutions, Refugee Camps, Mosques, Churches and the residential areas. They hardly spared any place. As per the available figures more than 67000 people including women and children have been killed by the Israeli Defence Forces from October 2023 onwards in different parts of Gaza. 460 people including 154 children have died of starvation and malnutrition. Ironically 2585 people are believed to have been killed during the current year from May onwards while trying to collect relief material from the Humantarian Foundation Sites. Similarly 1043 people have been killed in the West Bank by the IDF and Israeli Settlers.
Whole world except USA and very few other countries turned against the genocide and brutalities committed by Israel in Gaza and West Bank. The General Assembly and Security Council of United Nations Organisation and even the International Court of Justice passed various resolutions and orders, but to no avail. They felt helpless before the mighty USA. The unconditional continuous support of US encouraged the Prime Minister Netanyahu to spread war to Lebanon, Yemen and Islamic Republic of Iran which costed heavily for Israel.
The mounting pressure of the world on US and Israel has resulted in the present Ceasefire, but Israel still appears to be arrogant and they are still killing the innocent Palestinians on one pretext or the other. However, Ceasefire between the parties is a welcome step towards permanent solution to the age old dispute, but there is nothing much to celebrate, neither it qualifies the nomination of Donald Trump for the Nobel Prize.

National Conference is going to face rough weather in the forthcoming election to the four seats of Rajya Sabha and by-election to two Assembly seats of Nagrota & Budgam. Very powerful Shia leader of NC and Member Parliament from Budgam, Kashmir has openly revolted against the Party leadership on certain flimsy grounds and declared not to campaign in favour of candidates to be fielded by his party in Budgam and Nagrota Assembly constituencies. His decision may not have much effect in the Nagrota constituency, but it’s definitely going to adversely affect the party performance in Budgam constituency. His differences with the party may even be harmful in the election to Rajya Sabha as well. The NC leadership is losing grip in the party. Some individuals especially Agha Ruhullah Mehdi MP has become more powerful than the party. Earlier it used to be otherwise. Going by his social status and popularity in Shia community, the NC leadership is avoiding to take any disciplinary action against him. On the other hand NC’s increasing distance from Indian National Congress is also believed to have adverse effect in both the elections i.e Rajya Sabha as well as the Assembly elections. There are hardly any chances of rapprochement between the alliance partners. Anyways, let’s see which way the wind blows.

Dear friends, I am not a politician neither I am affiliated or inclined towards any political party at the UT or national level, but I keep my eyes and ears open and take interest in the developments taking place in the political arena surrounding all of us. I listen to the people with great interest discussing various day to day issues including politics in the political and social circles vociferously.
The current political issue at hand in the UT of Jammu and Kashmir is long pending rather much delayed election to the four seats of Rajya Sabha (Upper House of the Indian Parliament). Different people say different things in this regard, but the general consensus what I could gather is that while deciding or selecting the names of candidates for the four seats of Rajya Sabha, the political party in power should give equitable representation to both the Provinces i.e Jammu & Kashmir. Majority of the people are of the strong view that in the larger interest of party Dr. Farooq Abdullah shouldn’t contest this election and he should give opportunity to some other loyal leader of National Conference. Even some names are also doing rounds in the minds of the well known and well placed people. They say that going by the numbers one seat is sure to fall in the lap of BJP. Out of remaining three seats, one seat should be allotted to Indian National Congress to strengthen the otherwise a weak alliance and they consider the candidature of Shri G A Mir as a natural choice to represent the UT in the Rajya Sabha. National Conference can field two candidates one each from Jammu and Kashmir regions. Prominent people in the National Conference are of the strong view that whereas Choudhary Mohd. Ramzan should be fielded from Kashmir Province, Shri Sajjad Kichloo should be fielded from Jammu to promote the interests of the party and the public at large to a great extent. However, let us see which way the wind blows.
