The National Institute of Health Research (NIHR), located in Jodhpur, was originally established on 27 June 1984 as the Desert Medicine Research Centre (DMRC). It was later renamed the National Institute for Implementation Research on Non-Communicable Diseases (NIIRNCD) on 7 December 2019, redesignated as NIHR on 29 April 2026. The Institute houses state-of-the-art facilities for conducting basic

laboratory-based research in microbiology, biochemistry, and vector biology. It is also actively strengthening its capacity and workforce to advance implementation research on non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Currently, NIHR comprises a team of dedicated scientists and technical experts, supported by administrative and operational staff. The Institute’s key focus areas include cardiovascular diseases, chronic respiratory diseases, environmental health, nutritional disorders, cancers, injury and trauma, mental health conditions, including substance use disorders, genetic disorders, and other NCDs of public health significance in India. NIHR aims to generate high-impact implementation research across these domains, build capacity through specialized training programmes, and develop effective behaviour change communication strategies to address NCD risk factors. The Institute welcomes collaboration with academic and research institutions, as well as individual researchers committed to advancing public health in alignment with national health priorities.

Turning Ideas into Action for Better Adolescent Health!
A Consultation Meeting on the upcoming implementation phase of the project to strengthen adolescent health services through Ayushman Arogya Mandirs was organized by ICMR-National Institute for Health Research, Jodhpur, in collaboration with the CMHO Office, Sikar, on 2 September 2026.
Bringing together key stakeholders from the Health and Education Departments, the meeting focused on refining project communication materials and strengthening collaborative strategies for the effective implementation of RKSK and improved adolescent health services in Sikar district. The consultation meeting concluded with valuable inputs and a shared commitment to the effective implementation of the next phase.

ICMR-NIHR, Jodhpur actively participated in Ujjawal Rajasthan 3.O, Udaipur, showcasing the research activities, scientific initiatives, and public health work of ICMR and NIHR Jodhpur.

Through the exhibition, students as well as other visitors were informed about the research activities of ICMR-NIHR Jodhpur. The initiative aimed to promote scientific awareness, health awareness, and interest in research among students and the general public.

The two-day workshop on “Qualitative Research: Data Collection & Analysis” was successfully conducted on 19–20 August 2026 at MRHRU, Bhanpur Kalan, Jaipur.

The workshop brought together participants from universities and institutions across India, creating a diverse and engaging space for learning, discussion and practical exploration of qualitative research. The sessions covered qualitative study designs, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, sampling and saturation, data management, coding, interpretation and hands-on training in NVivo software.

A special thanks to Prof. (Dr.) Pankaj Bhardwaj, Director, ICMR-NIHR, Jodhpur, for his continuous support, encouragement and guidance in organising such training programmes.

Dr. Piyusha Majumdar, Professor, IIHMR University, Jaipur, and Dr. Ramesh K. Huda, Scientist-D, ICMR-NIHR, Jodhpur, delivered very insightful and engaging sessions. Participants particularly appreciated the practical orientation and rich discussions during the sessions.

The Community Awareness Programme "SURAKSHA – Strengthening Urgent Response & Risk Prevention Action for Keeping Society Healthy & Aware” was successfully organised at CHC Sekhala, Jodhpur, by ICMR–National Institute of Health Research (NIHR), Jodhpur, under the project “Implementation Research on Enhancing Trauma Care at Health and Wellness Centres".

The programme was conducted under the guidance of the Director, ICMR-NIHR, and scientists Dr Mukti Khetan and Dr. Ramesh Kumar Sangwan, with expert support from Dr. Arun Kumar from Dr. S. N. Medical College, Jodhpur.
The programme aimed to strengthen community awareness regarding the prevention of injuries, timely first aid, appropriate emergency response, and the importance of seeking timely medical care following trauma and emergencies.

Through interactive session community members were sensitised to the importance of responding appropriately during emergencies and ensuring timely referral and access to healthcare services.

The successful conduct of the programme reflects the collaborative efforts of ICMR–NIHR, CHC Sekhala, and Dr. S. N. Medical College towards strengthening community-level preparedness and improving trauma and emergency care.

The second day of the ICMR-SHINE Programme was successfully organised on 12 August 2026 by the MRHRU Bhanpur Kalan team at Mahatma Gandhi Government School, Bhanpur Kalan.
The programme featured interactive sessions, educational videos, awareness activities, and a laboratory visit, designed to spark scientific curiosity and encourage students to explore the world of science, health, and biomedical research.
Students were introduced to the work of ICMR and MRHRU and gained insights into scientific thinking, health research, public health, and career opportunities in science and research.
