🌱 Vermicomposting: Empowering Sustainable Livelihoods in West Sikkim

The State Institute of Rural Development & Panchayati Raj (SIRD&PR), Government of Sikkim, has produced this awareness video to educate and inspire rural communities across Sikkim about the benefits of vermicomposting and sustainable organic farming.

Through interviews with local farmers and community members, the video showcases how vermicomposting has become a successful livelihood initiative in the community clusters of Upper Moonew and along the Sombaria Road corridor (Daramdin–Sombaria), West Sikkim.

Led by local farming collectives such as the Sikkim Kishan Society, vermicomposting is practiced as a scientific and community-based enterprise, converting organic waste into premium, nutrient-rich organic fertilizer. This environmentally friendly practice enriches soil health, improves crop productivity, and supports Sikkim's vision as India's 100% Organic State.

This documentary-style awareness initiative by SIRD&PR, Sikkim aims to share practical knowledge, highlight successful rural livelihood models, encourage sustainable agricultural practices, and motivate communities to adopt eco-friendly farming techniques for a more prosperous future.

State Level Orientation Training on Panchayat Development Plan (PDP) Successfully Conducted at SIRD&PR, Karfectar

Karfectar, 6th July 2026:

The State Institute of Rural Development & Panchayati Raj (SIRD&PR), Karfectar, under the Rural Development Department, Government of Sikkim, successfully organized a State Level Orientation Training on Panchayat Development Plan (PDP) on 6th July 2026 at its campus.

The training focused on promoting participatory, inclusive, and evidence-based local development planning. It emphasized strengthening Gram Panchayat Development Planning through participatory governance, data-driven decision-making, and convergence of resources.

The programme witnessed active participation from Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) representatives and officials, who engaged in meaningful discussions and knowledge-sharing sessions aimed at enhancing grassroots planning and governance.

Through this initiative, SIRD&PR reaffirmed its commitment to empowering local bodies and strengthening decentralized governance, ensuring that development planning at the grassroots level becomes more effective, transparent, and inclusive.

The session concluded with a renewed sense of responsibility among participants to implement PDP processes more efficiently in their respective jurisdictions, contributing towards sustainable rural development in Sikkim.
