Sakkarbaug Zoological Park The Sakkarbaug zoo was established in the year 1863 by erstwhile Nawab of Junagadh, H.H. Mahobatkhanji Babi-II.

It may be only zoo in the world to be set up expressly to interact with a wild life sanctuary. From its inception, the zoo has rendered health, medical and rescue services to the last surviving wild population of Asiatic Lion of the Gir Sanctuary and National Park. After independence zoo was managed by education department and after 1960 Gujarat forest department is managing this zoo. The legend a

nd popular belief is that the name Sakkarbaug has originated from a garden having sweet water well. (Sakkar means sugar and baug means garden)

Sakkarbaug zoo is managed with an objective “to complement the initiatives in conservation of wild fauna of Gujarat with special emphasis on Asiatic lion and strengthen the national efforts in conservation of biodiversity of country particularly the fauna by exhibiting wild animals for education, ex-situ conservation, research and recreation.”
