🌿👩‍🌾 RAWE Students Experience Practical Learning at CPCRI Experimental Fields 👨‍🌾🌿

As part of their RAWE program, 13 agriculture students from Jagannath University, Jaipur and LPU, Jalandhar visited the CPCRI Experimental Fields, Kasaragod, for a hands-on learning experience facilitated by KVK Kasaragod.

🌴 The students explored the Coconut-Based High Density Multistoried Cropping System, where crops like banana, black pepper, pineapple, nutmeg, and cinnamon are cultivated in an integrated, space-efficient model.

🥥 A visit to the Desiccated Coconut Powder Processing Unit offered insights into value addition and rural entrepreneurship.

🌱 At the Coconut Germplasm Nursery, students interacted on key topics like:
✔️ Dwarf and tall coconut types
✔️ Tender nut varieties
✔️ Region-specific selections for diverse farm needs

🍫 A special session on scientific cocoa cultivation was led by Mr. Kiranmoy Patra, RAWE coordinator, introduced the students to scientific cocoa cultivation, with a focus on best practices and varieties suitable for the region.

On the occasion of World Honeybee Day, ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kasaragod successfully conducted a field-level outreach programme across Badiyadka, Narampady, and Perdala, embracing the global theme “Bee Engaged with Youth.”

As part of the initiative, Pinewood Newton Bee Hives—a durable and efficient model—were distributed to farm families and rural youths engaged in apiculture and allied farming.

🌾 The event featured hands-on technical sessions on:
✅ Monsoon management of bee colonies
✅ Hive protection during heavy rains
✅ Pest and disease control
✅ Supplementary feeding & honey extraction

As part of the ongoing Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyaan (VKSA) 2025, Team 2 of ICAR-KVK Kasaragod brought expert guidance, local empowerment, and sustainable innovation to the farming communities of Chemanad and Cherkala Grama Panchayats.

🌾 Morning Session – Chemanad Panchayat
Led by Panchayat President Smt. Sufaija Aboobacker, the session focused on real field challenges and practical scientific solutions:
🔸 Coconut pest control using eco-friendly biopesticides (mites, beetles, white grubs) – Dr. M. Sujithra, ICAR–CPCRI
🔸 Marine-based income diversification & SC/ST schemes – Dr. Rejula K., ICAR–CIFT
🔸 Fruit value addition training for SHGs & women entrepreneurs – Dr. Saritha Hegde, KVK Kasaragod
🗣️ Farmers interacted directly with scientists, raising concerns and getting actionable advice on crop health, value chains, and farm resilience.

🌿 Afternoon Session – Cherkala Panchayat
Opened by Vice-President Smt. Safiya Hashim, with support from ward members, ATMA officials, and Agri. Department staff.
Discussions focused on:
✅ Horticultural innovations
✅ Biological pest management
✅ Fisheries-based enterprise models
✅ Awareness of central/state agri schemes

💡 With representation from 7 villages and more than 300 farmers, the outreach not only enhanced scientific awareness but also strengthened community capacity for post-monsoon planning, diversification, and scheme convergence.

Under the nationwide Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyaan (VKSA 2025), a high-impact outreach and farmer–scientist interface was held at East Eleri to equip farmers with practical strategies for addressing emerging field challenges and preparing effectively for the post-monsoon cropping season.

💡 Highlights of the Session:
🔹 Integrated pest and disease management in plantation crops, with emphasis on white grub control in turmeric, ginger, and arecanut – by Dr. C. Sellaperumal (ICAR–IISR)
🔹 Rejuvenation of coconut gardens, seasonal crop planning, and homestead diversification using pest-resistant varieties and water-efficient techniques – by Dr. Benjamin Mathew (SMS–Horticulture, KVK)
🔹 Expert advice on utilizing flagship schemes like PM-KISAN, MIDH, and Kerala’s Samagra Karshika Padhathi for better access to inputs, credit, and marketing support – by Dr. Manojkumar T.S. (Principal Scientist & Head, KVK Kasaragod)
🔹 Emphasis on soil health restoration, nutrient budgeting, and climate-resilient farming practices ahead of the next cropping cycle
👥 Farmers raised pressing concerns such as pest outbreaks, declining soil fertility, erratic weather, and scarcity of quality planting material. The expert panel addressed each with field-tested, locally relevant solutions and encouraged follow-up support through KVK and Krishi Bhavan services.

This VKSA session reinforced the need for scientific preparedness in post-monsoon farming, while promoting collaborative extension, responsive governance, and farmer-centric technology adoption in Kasaragod’s hilly and midland agro-ecosystems.
