Modern Advancement and Mental Development

Today, the world is continuously becoming more modern and progressive in every sphere. Through inventions brought about by constant innovation and transformation, science too continues to advance steadily along the path of progress.

But does this advancement and development, in its present form, truly appear complete? Or does it still require a proper examination of its objectives and applications?

The direct answer to this can be seen in our present social realities. Parallel to the advancement of science and technology, the individual is witnessing a continual decline in the values of moral responsibility, sincere conduct, discipline, and ideals. Blinded and oblivious in his arrogance, he is becoming increasingly injurious; enslaved to his own lust and desires, he continues to become immersed in the cloak of unrighteousness.

Today, in some places, religion, caste, and sect are being made subjects of hatred and fanaticism, while elsewhere people, in the name of faith and devotion, remain entrenched within the confines of superstition, thereby revealing the impoverishment of their own reasoning. In some places, the elements of nature are being assaulted and destroyed for selfish interests, while elsewhere those in positions of power give rise to corruption, disorder, and anarchy, thereby expanding the sphere of unrest.

This is neither positive modern advancement in any genuine sense nor a state of its proper application; for the foremost necessity is mental development—such a development of the mind as teaches human beings to act selflessly for the welfare of nature and all of humanity.

This is not to suggest that everyone is following the same course; however, when the majority of activities begin to imitate such a tendency, their sheer prevalence gradually begins to determine the direction of society. A majority may always exert influence through its dominance; but when that very dominance becomes driven by purposelessness, unjust constraints, and irrationality, it ceases to be an instrument of progress and instead becomes a detrimental force that weakens and undermines the very essence of progress.

In India, rivers are not regarded merely as bodies of water; they are revered as manifestations of the Divine and worshipped as sacred goddesses. They embody profound spiritual significance and are honoured with the utmost reverence. It is, therefore, deeply distressing and alarming that the sacred River Ganga continues to be polluted by our own actions.

To restore and preserve the purity of the Ganga, the Government of India launched the ‘Namami Gange’ programme with a total approved outlay of ₹42,500 crore, of which approximately ₹21,340 crore has been released and utilised so far. Despite these efforts, the river continues to face severe pollution across the states of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal due to untreated urban sewage, industrial effluents, agricultural runoff, and waste generated through religious and social activities.

If, despite sustained governmental efforts, this challenge remains unresolved, the responsibility cannot rest with the State alone—it is equally shared by every citizen. We must collectively ensure that our rivers remain free from pollution and actively contribute to their conservation and restoration, for the rivers of India are not merely natural resources; they are the very foundation of the nation’s life, culture, and civilisation.

• In Ladakh and the Himalayan region, rapidly melting glaciers are sounding a grave warning for future water security and the fragile mountain ecosystem.
• The Aravalli Range across Delhi-NCR, Haryana, and Rajasthan is enduring the impacts of illegal mining and unchecked encroachment, increasing the risk of desertification and ecological imbalance.
• Across Uttarakhand and the broader Himalayan region, unregulated construction, deforestation, and the growing frequency of landslides are stark reminders of nature’s fragile limits.

Nature takes centuries to shape its beauty. A tree requires years of quiet perseverance to become what it is, while the stability of mountains and the lushness of forests are the rewards of time’s enduring discipline. Yet, in the name of progress and development, humanity destroys this beauty within moments—sacrificing natural elegance for an artificial shine.

We forget that what we create is temporary, while what we destroy is the very foundation of our identity, existence, and future. Every forest cleared, every mountain broken, and every tree felled is not merely a loss to nature—it is a reduction of the very breath that sustains life.

We are building roads, yet closing the paths of our own survival. We are raising taller buildings, yet uprooting the foundations that have always supported us. Development that demands the destruction of nature is not true progress; it is merely short-sighted ambition disguised as achievement.

An ordinary person—the laborer contributing to the construction of towering buildings through honest work—owns neither luxury vehicles nor pollution-intensive industries. The factory worker, too, is often not the architect of pollution, but someone striving to earn a livelihood within a system they do not control. The street vendor, the handcart seller, and the owner of a modest neighborhood shop who sustains a family by selling everyday essentials may not possess an advanced understanding of environmental preservation, nature, or climate change; yet their way of life often embodies restraint, moderation, and comparatively modest consumption.

In contrast, those with greater wealth, greater access to resources, and greater capacity for consumption inevitably wield a far greater influence over the environment. With such privilege comes a proportionately greater moral responsibility. If those who claim to be custodians of nature fail to exercise restraint over excessive consumption, wastefulness, and the relentless exploitation of resources, and instead resort to deception or seek to deflect responsibility onto those whose environmental footprint is comparatively negligible, then such claims remain little more than declarations devoid of substance.

The preservation of our planet will not be secured by tree-planting campaigns or eloquent speeches alone. It begins when privilege is accompanied by accountability. The Earth needs, above all, those with the greatest means to become the most responsible in the choices they make, the lives they lead, and the resources they consume.

We are chasing our own endless needs, forgetting that this very nature is our lifeline. If we do not wake up today, future generations will inherit nothing but a history of pollution and a desolate wasteland.

We walk this Earth as if we own it—yet we forget, we are only temporary guests. Nature is not ours to command; it is a delicate balance we are meant to respect.

Our Environment, once pure and nurturing, now stands fractured under the weight of our excesses. The Climate is no longer stable—it shifts, reacts, and warns. Through raging storms, melting glaciers, and burning forests, the Earth is no longer silent—it is demanding balance.

And where does that leave Humanity?

At a crossroads.

Because Nature does not depend on us—but we depend entirely on it. Not for comfort, but for survival itself. The air we breathe, the water we drink, the soil that feeds us—none of it can be replaced by wealth, power, or progress.

Today, our Earth is not merely warming; it is smoldering in an intense, scorching heat. The atmospheric imbalance has become so profound that the seasons have completely forgotten their natural rhythm and cycles. Unseasonal rains, blistering heatwaves, and the fading presence of winter are haunting evidence that the harmonious symphony of nature has turned into a chaotic noise.

This is not the result of some random natural calamity, but a consequence of the unbridled ambitions of the 'social animal' (mankind). In a blind race for momentary pleasure and progress, humans have strangled the environment. We have erected concrete jungles by hacking away the very green lungs that once sustained our lives.

The threat of Global Warming is no longer just a topic for debate; it is an existential crisis:

Melting Glaciers: Rising temperatures are causing polar ice caps to vanish, leading to a dangerous rise in sea levels.

Loss of Biodiversity: Man's selfish pursuits have pushed countless species to the brink of extinction.
