Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (Erstwhile Kolkata Port) is the first Major Port and only riverine port in India.

Commissioned in 1870, the journey of the first major as well as the only riverine port of the country continues through the tortuous process of ebb and tide, expectancy and challenges, intricately woven with the varying draft/siltation of the river Hooghly which cradles it, as it continues to adapt and re-engineer itself in newer locales and diversifying functions. Kolkata Port, which celebrated i

ts 147th birthday in 2017, was once the premier port of the country but since 1966-67 faced a steady decline in its fortunes. However, due to its innovation and adaptability, there had been a steady flourish in cargo and vessel handling and in different spheres of Port since recent years. Kolkata Port is capable of handling very large vessels viz. ULCCs/ VLCCs at Sandheads, situated at the southernmost fringe of the long navigational fairway of KoPT which is gifted with the natural draft advantage of more than 50 metres. Kolkata Port handled 50.951 million tonnes (mt) of traffic in 2016-17 recording a growth over 2015-16. KoPT handled 7,71,676 TEUs in 2016-17 - phenomenal rise of more than 1 lakh TEUs (16.41% growth) over 2015-16. KoPT ranked 3rd amongst all Indian Major Ports in terms of Container traffic in 2016-17. KoPT continued to handle the highest number of vessels in the major port circuit.

नगर राजभाषा कार्यान्वयन समिति (उपक्रम-2) कोलकाता की छमाही समीक्षा बैठक दिनांक 25.08.2026 को धनों धान्यो, कोलकाता के सभागार में श्यामा प्रसाद मुखर्जी पोर्ट, कोलकाता एवं स्टील अथॉरिटी ऑफ़ इंडिया के सौजन्य से अत्यंत गरिमामय वातावरण में सम्पन्न किया गया। समीक्षा बैठक में सदस्य कार्यालयों के प्रधान तथा राजभाषा अधिकारियों ने शिरकत की। बैठक की अध्यक्षता श्री सुरेंद्र कुमार शर्मा, अध्यक्ष नराकास (उपक्रम -2) कोलकाता एवं मुख्य अतिथि के रूप में श्री उमेश राय, शहरी विकास राज्य मंत्री तथा श्री सम्राट राही, उपाध्यक्ष, एसएमपीके उपस्थित रहे । उन्होंने समिति की गतिविधियों की समीक्षा करते हुए राजभाषा हिंदी के कार्यान्वयन में हुई प्रगति पर संतोष व्यक्त किया तथा सभी से आह्वान किया कि यदि सभी 33 कार्यालय नराकास के बैनर तले एक एक कार्यक्रम /गतिविधि का आयोजन करें, तो नराकास उपक्रम कोलकाता पूर्वी क्षेत्र के नराकासों में सबसे ऊपर की श्रेणी में गिना जाएगा। गृह मंत्रालय, राजभाषा विभाग (पूर्वी क्षेत्र) के क्षेत्रीय कार्यान्वयन कार्यालय के उपनिदेशक डॉ. विचित्रसेन गुप्त ने सदस्य कार्यालयों के रिपोर्टों की समीक्षा करते हुए नराकास उपक्रम कोलकाता की गतिविधियों को सराहा। केंद्रीय अनुवाद ब्यूरो के श्री ए. के. श्रीवास्तव ने कार्यालयीन कार्यों में अनुवाद की महत्ता और अनुवाद प्रशिक्षण के संबंध में जानकारी प्रदान किया। हिंदी शिक्षण योजना के सहायक निदेशक ने राजभाषा नीति के प्रभावी कार्यान्वयन में हिंदी प्रशिक्षण के संबंध में मार्ग दर्शन प्रदान किये। श्यामा प्रसाद मुखर्जी पोर्ट, कोलकाता के उपाध्यक्ष श्री सम्राट राही ने भारतीय एकता के लिए राजभाषा हिंदी को महत्वपूर्ण बताते हुए हमारा मार्गदर्शन किया । बैठक में नराकास के तत्वावधान में आयोजित विभिन्न प्रतियोगिताओं के विजेताओं तथा विभिन्न गतिविधियों में सक्रिय भूमिका निभाने वाले कार्यालयों को सक्रिय सहभागिता पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया गया। कार्यक्रम का संचालन श्री अजय शंकर मिश्र, राजभाषा अधिकारी, धन्यवाद ज्ञापन डॉ बरेजा, ऑयल इंडिया ने किया। श्री आदि की महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका रही।

SMPA inaugurates Three-Month Campaign for Vigilance Awareness Week 2026

Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority (SMPA), Kolkata, today (17th August, 2026) inaugurated the Three-Month Preventive Vigilance Campaign 2026, being undertaken as a prelude to Vigilance Awareness Week 2026, under the theme:

“सत्यनिष्ठा से समृद्धि”
“Probity for Prosperity”

The programme was graced by Shri Sumit Deb, Former Chairman-cum-Managing Director, NMDC Limited, as the Guest of Honour, along with Shri Rathendra Raman, Chairperson, SMPA; Shri Samrat Rahi, Dy. Chairperson, KDS; Shri Jayasimha Ambour, Managing Director, HDC; Shri Devidatta Satapathy, CVO, SMPA, and Heads of Departments and Divisions of Kolkata Dock System (KDS) and Haldia Dock Complex (HDC).

The three-month campaign, being observed from 17 August to 16 November 2026, aims to strengthen preventive vigilance and promote transparency, accountability and integrity across the organisation.

Key focus areas of the campaign include:

🔹 Disposal of pending cases
🔹 Capacity-building programmes
🔹 Digital initiatives
🔹 Contract management

A key highlight of the programme was the inauguration of SATARC 2.0 – Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority Tracking and Registration of Complaints, the upgraded Online Complaint Management Portal of SMPA. The platform is aimed at providing a more secure, user-friendly and transparent mechanism for registration, processing, tracking and monitoring of complaints.

The programme commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries, followed by the Welcome Address by the CVO, SMPA. Addresses by the Dy. Chairperson, KDS and Managing Director, HDC were followed by the Keynote Address by the Chairperson, SMPA, and an insightful address by the Guest of Honour, Shri Sumit Deb.

The campaign seeks to reinforce the message that integrity, transparency and efficient systems are essential for sustainable institutional growth and good governance.

Together, let us build a more transparent, accountable and responsive SMPA.

Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority (SMPA), Kolkata, marked the approach to the 80th Independence Day with the commissioning of a 60 mtr Flag Mast and Flag Walk for Nation at Netaji Subhas Dock.

The key attraction of the ceremony was the commissioning of the monumental National Flag installed at Netaji Subhas Dock by Chairperson, SMPA along with the Deputy Chairperson, CVO , HoDs, Sr.Comdt. and officials of SMPA and KDS CISF Unit.

Standing at 60 metres (approximately 197 feet), the flagmast designed as a permanent installation carries an imposing 30 ft × 20 ft Tricolour operated through a motorised double-drum winch system, creating a prominent new landmark on Kolkata’s historic port landscape
reflecting SMPA’s historic association with the

nation’s maritime heritage and development.

Haldia Dock Complex (HDC) of Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK), has once again raised the bar by setting another all-time record in container vessel interchange.

SITC Cagayan (Voy. 2612S) achieved an impressive interchange of 2,612 TEUs during her recent call at HDC, sailing on 12 August 2026—surpassing the previous record of 2,583 TEUs set by SITC Makassar (Voy. 2612S).
