Samata Party was formed in 1994 when a faction lead by George Fernandes and Nitish Kumar broke away from Janta Dal. The reason was that the party ideology had shifted to castism .

তির পথ সরে এসে, এবার পরিবর্তনের এই রাজ্যে আবারও নিজেদের ঘর গোছানোর কাজ নতুন করে শুরু করলো সমতা পার্টির পশ্চিমবঙ্গ শাখা। সংগঠনের রাজ্য সভাপতি গৌতম দাসের নেতৃত্বে সম্প্রতি কোর কমিটির এক বৈঠকে রাজ্য কমিটির নানা পদে নির্বাচন সম্পন্ন হয়েছে, খুব শিগগিরই জেলাস্তরেও সংগঠনের নতুন কমিটিগুলির নির্বাচনের কাজ শেষ হয়ে যাবে। তার পরেই নেওয়া হবে নানা কর্মসূচি। রাজনৈতিক আন্দোলন গড়ে তুলতে দলে নতুন আর তরুণদের সদস্যপদ দেওয়ার কথাও ভাবা হচ্ছে বলে জানিয়েছেন রাজ্য সমতা পার্টির সভাপতি গৌতম দাস। সেই সঙ্গে তাঁদের দীর্ঘদিনের দাবি মেনে যেভাবে কেস্টপুর উড়ালপুলের কাজ সরকার ও প্রশাসন আন্তরিকতার সঙ্গে বিবেচনা করেছেন এবং উড়ালপুলের কাজ শুরু করেছে,তা সন্তোষ প্রকাশ করে মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়ের নেতৃত্বাধীন সরকারের ভূয়সী প্রশংসা করেছে রাজ্য সমতা পার্টির সভাপতি।
George Fernades rose to fame during 1977- 79 for his opposition to multinational companies. He was the key figure behind packing off Coca cola from India then. He campaigned against BJP calling it a communal party. In 1996 Samata Party came into alliance with BJP and won on eight seats, six in Bihar and one each in Uttar Pradesh and Orissa. In 1998 elections again in alliance with BJP it won twelve seats, ten from Bihar and two from Uttar Pradesh. Since then the two leaders George Fernandes and Nitish Kumar were Union Ministers in the NDA government; George Fernandes the Defence Minister and Nitish Kumar the Railway Minister. Yet another split in Janta Dal, SP has been able to rope in Janta Dal Led by Sharad Yadav, Lok Shakti led by Ramakrishna Hegde and Samata Party on a single platform for the NDA. In the 1996 general elections, Samata Party came into alliance with Bharatiya Janta Party and won on eight seats, six in Bihar and one each in Uttar Pradesh and Orissa. In 1998 general elections, again in alliance with Bharatiya Janta Party it won twelve seats, ten from Bihar and two from Uttar Pradesh. In the 13th Lok Sabha (1999–2004), it had 12 (out of 545) members. In October 2003, Fernandes, the president of the party, announced that the party would be merging with the Janata Dal (United). The Janata Dal (United) was part of the ruling coalition in the National Democratic Alliance. One minority in the party led by Brahmanand Mandal refused to go along with the merger. The Election Commission of India decided that the merger was not technically complete and so a faction was allowed to function under the name of Samata Party. Recently there have been attempts by loyalists of George Fernandes to revive the Party. This possibility was not discounted by Fernandes' loyalist Jaya Jaitley. In Uttar Pradesh Sumit Sharma (Convener Of Uttar Pradesh) is again restructuring the Samata Party.
