METRO RAILWAY, THE LIFELINE OF KOLKATA North-South Metro

Metro Railway is the lifeline of the ‘City of Joy’. G.

Conceived in 1949, Metro Railway is the first Metro project of India. Today, the Metro network spans from the southernmost part called Kavi Subhash (New Garia) to the northernmost part called Dakshineswar. On 24th October, 1984, the Metro Railway’s commercial service started running a distance of 3.40 km. with 5 stations between Esplanade and Bhowanipore (now Netaji Bhavan). On 17th September, 199

5, it started running the full length of 16.45 km. in the North-South axis of the city between Dum Dum and Tollygunge. In the second phase (9.7 km. route), Metro Railway was extended from Mahanayak Uttam Kumar (Tollygunge) to Kavi Nazrul and later from Kavi Nazrul to Kavi Subhash (New Garia), which were inaugurated on 22nd August, 2009 and 7th October, 2010 respectively. On 10th July 2013, Metro services further extended from Dum Dum to Noapara (2.091 kms). Shri Narendra Modi, Hon’ble Prime Minister inaugurated the extension from Noapara to Dakshineswar (4.1 kms) on 22nd February, 2021. East-West Metro

Shri Piyush Goyal, Hon’ble Minister of Railways, inaugurated the first phase of East-West Metro, stretching from Salt Lake Sector-V to Salt Lake Stadium, covering a distance of 5.3 kms on 13th February, 2020. On 4th October, 2020, Shri Piyush Goyal, Hon’ble Minister of Railways, virtually inaugurated further extension of East-West Metro from Salt Lake Stadium to Phoolbagan (a distance of 1.66 kms.). After completion of the East-West Metro project from Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector-V, it will be the first in the entire country where Metro will run under a mighty river like Hooghly.
