【The Legacy of Japan's Kamon】

For over 800 years, kamon have served as Japan's unique family emblems, representing an entire household rather than an individual. First used by aristocratic families during the Heian Period (794–1185) to decorate personal belongings, kamon later became an important part of samurai culture. Displayed on flags, helmets, and armour, their simple, bold designs allowed warriors to recognise allies on the battlefield.
During the Edo Period (1603–1868), when many common people did not officially have surnames, kamon helped identify families and households. Even after surnames became widespread in the Meiji Period, these crests continued to be passed down through generations.
Today, there are more than 2,500 different kamon, each reflecting centuries of Japanese history, identity, and craftsmanship.

【"Ancient Capitals of Asuka and Fujiwara" Inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List】

On 26 July, at the 48th Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee held in Busan, Republic of Korea, UNESCO officially inscribed Japan's nominated property, "Ancient Capitals of Asuka and Fujiwara," on its World Heritage List.
Asuka and Fujiwara were among Japan's earliest capital cities. These historic sites mark a vital period in Japan's history, when the country's first centralized government was established during the birth of ancient states in East Asia. They also reflect close exchanges with the Korean Peninsula and China.
We hope this recognition will inspire more people around the world to discover and appreciate this remarkable cultural heritage.

【Umi no Hi: Embracing the Spirit of the Sea】

Unlike polished commercial icons, yuru-chara often have delightfully simple, quirky designs—often designed by local residents. They serve as ambassadors for their communities, promoting local history, culture, tourism, and businesses while creating a sense of pride among residents.

Today, these lovable mascots can be found welcoming visitors, appearing at festivals, supporting local events, and even helping communities recover after natural disasters—proving that a simple character can bring people together in remarkable ways.

【Japan's Summer Nights in Full Bloom】

In Japan, summer is incomplete without the breathtaking beauty of hanabi. As families and friends gather for vibrant summer festivals (matsuri), the night sky transforms into a canvas of light, celebrating a tradition that has inspired generations.

Japanese fireworks began as military smoke signals during the Sengoku period before evolving into the spectacular art form we know today. Passed down through generations of skilled artisans, this tradition continues to embrace innovation- from the creation of pastel-colored fireworks, once thought impossible, to eco-friendly designs using biodegradable materials and water-soluble components to reduce environmental impact.
