Khet Bachao Abhiyan Enters Fourth Day in Kulgam, Focus on Sustainable Farming Practices

The fourth day of the Khet Bachao Abhiyan was successfully conducted by Krishi Vigyan Kendra Kulgam (KVK-Kulgam) in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture at Chowgam and KB Pora villages of Kulgam.

During the programme, Dr. Ab Shakoor Khanday and Dr. Tariq Iqbal provided technical guidance and created awareness among the farming community regarding the objectives and significance of the Khet Bachao Abhiyan.

The scientists highlighted the importance of timely crop protection measures, balanced nutrient management, soil health improvement, Integrated Pest Management (IPM), natural farming practices, and the adoption of recommended agricultural technologies to enhance crop health and productivity. They also emphasized the need for fertilizer application based on soil test recommendations to ensure efficient nutrient utilization, reduce cultivation costs, and promote environmental sustainability.

Farmers were encouraged to incorporate organic and natural inputs wherever feasible, adopt eco-friendly crop management practices, and maintain regular coordination with KVK-Kulgam and the Department of Agriculture for timely technical guidance and advisory services.

The campaign concluded with a renewed appeal to farmers to actively participate in the Khet Bachao Abhiyan and embrace scientific and sustainable farming practices. The experts stressed that the adoption of natural farming methods, balanced fertilizer use, and improved crop management techniques would help safeguard crops, enhance productivity, improve soil health, and contribute to the overall growth and sustainability of the agricultural sector in the district.

An awareness-cum-interaction programme under the “Khet Bachao Abhiyaan” was organized by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Kulgam, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir at Yaroo and Gandwani villages of Kulgam district on 03 June 2026. The programme aimed to create awareness among farmers regarding sustainable agricultural practices, soil health management, and the conservation of agricultural land for long-term environmental sustainability.

During the programme, Dr. Ab. Shakoor Khanday, Head, KVK-Kulgam, highlighted the importance of protecting fertile agricultural land and adopting eco-friendly farming practices. Dr. Tariq Iqbal, Scientist, Agricultural Extension, delivered an informative lecture on farmer awareness, sustainable agriculture, and the judicious use of farm resources to enhance productivity while maintaining soil health.

An awareness-cum-interaction programme under the Khet Bachao Abhiyan was organized by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Kulgam, SKUAST-Kashmir at Pachgam Nard (Kund) on 02 June 2026. An awareness programme under the “Khet Bachao Abhiyaan” was organized at Krishi Vigyan Kendra Kulgam with the aim of creating awareness among farmers regarding soil health management, balanced use of fertilizers, and sustainable agricultural practices.

During the programme, Head KVK-Kulgam Dr Ab Shakoor Khanday delivered a detailed lecture on the importance of conserving agricultural land, maintaining soil fertility, and adopting scientific and sustainable farming practices. Emphasis was laid on soil test-based fertilizer application, integrated nutrient management, use of organic manures, and reducing the excessive use of chemical fertilizers for long-term sustainability of agriculture.

An awareness programme on Weather Based Crop Insurance for apple growers was jointly organized by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Kulgam, Division of Agrometeorology, SKUAST-K and ICICI Lombard at KB Pora on 21 May 2026.
Prof. Sameera Qayoom, Head, Division of Agrometeorology, SKUAST-K, highlighted the increasing vulnerability of Apple to changing weather patterns and stressed the importance of weather-based crop insurance in mitigating financial risks faced by growers. Prof. Latief Ahmad renowned agrometeorology scientist stressed upon need for wider awareness among farming communities about the weather uncertainties and the related insurance schemes.
Mr. Abhijit from ICICI Lombard provided detailed information regarding eligibility criteria, premium structure, coverage, claim settlement procedures, and enrolment process under the insurance scheme. He also addressed farmers’ queries related to compensation and risk coverage against adverse weather events including hailstorms, frost, and untimely rainfall.
Dr. Ab Shakoor, Head, KVK Kulgam, emphasized the importance of adopting risk management strategies for sustainable apple development in the district. He encouraged apple growers to take advantage of crop insurance schemes to safeguard their livelihoods and enhance resilience against climatic uncertainties.
The programme concluded with an interactive session during which participating farmers shared their concerns and received expert guidance regarding the practical aspects of weather-based crop insurance for apple orchards.
