Today's Ramsar Spotlight takes us to Bhindawas Wildlife Sanctuary in Haryana.

Bhindawas began as an important water-storage system designed to preserve excess water from the Jawaharlal Nehru Canal during interruptions in the lift canal network. Over time, the increasing presence of resident and migratory birds transformed the landscape into a thriving sanctuary.

Located near Jhajjar, a region celebrated for its rich cultural heritage, the wetland today stands as an example of how engineering, ecology and local traditions can flourish together.

In Odisha, an IFS officer is proving that protecting forests is no longer only about being in the field; it is also about having the right technology at the right time.

From AI-powered elephant alerts to satellite-based fire monitoring, IFS Nitish Kumar is using innovation to make forest conservation faster, smarter and more effective.

A 2014-batch Indian Forest Service officer and DFO, Angul Forest Division, he has brought technology into everyday forest governance, using it to tackle forest fires, human-elephant conflict, habitat restoration and citizen participation.

As he explained it, "Our forest is a very complex area. We have to do a lot of work in it. For that, we have to do a lot of data analysis."

That belief has translated into a GIS-based portal accessible even to Forest Guards at the beat level, four AI-enabled surveillance towers watching over elephant corridors, and a citizen app that lets ordinary people report illegal felling or request seedlings with just a photo or a message.

The results are remarkable. In Angul, forest-fire alerts fell from 738 in 2023 to 333 in 2026, while the affected area dropped from 157.1 hectares to just 12.35 hectares. The division also recorded 32,816 km of cumulative forest patrolling in May 2026.

Four AI-enabled e-Eye towers now monitor key elephant movement areas, while thermal drones and early-warning systems support rapid responses to human-elephant conflict.

For IFS Kumar, technology works best when it strengthens the people using it.

His approach shows that conservation is not only about protecting trees and wildlife. It is also about empowering the people on the ground with better information, faster communication and smarter tools.

Today's Ramsar Spotlight takes us to Sur Sarovar in Uttar Pradesh.

Also known as Keetham Lake, the wetland shares a deep connection with the 16th-century poet Surdas. Local traditions hold that the peaceful surroundings inspired him to compose his devotional poetry dedicated to Lord Krishna. The Surkuti temple stands as a tribute to his enduring literary and spiritual legacy.
