District Legal Services Authority, Majuli was constituted in 2018 to implement Legal Services Programme in the District and was constituted to give effect to the policies and objectives of National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). Sri Nogen Senabaya Deori, AJS, the District and Sessions Judge, Majuli is the Chairman and Smti Saraswati Johori Padun,(AJS) is the Secretary of DLSA, Majuli. Our inst
itution have the following objectives:-
1.Providing free and competent legal services to the weaker sections of the society.
2. Spreading legal literacy and awareness.
3.Reach out and respond programme, bridging the gap between legally available benefits and the entitled beneficiaries.
4.Resolution of disputes by way of Lok Adalats and other Alternate Dispute Resolution mechanism. Section 12 of Legal Services Authorities Act 1987, provides criteria for giving free legal services and it covers the following eight (8) categories of beneficiaries -
(1) A member of scheduled caste and schedule tribe. (2) A victim of human trafficking for begging as referred to in Article 23 of the Constitution. (4) A person with disability as defined in Clause(i) of Section 2 of the Person with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995
(5) A person under circumstances of underserved want, such as being a victim of a mass disaster, ethnic violence, caste atrocity, flood, drought, earthquake or industrial disaster. (6) An industrial woman. (7) In custody including custody in a protective home within the meaning of Clause(g) of Section 2 of the Juvenile Justice Act, 1986 or in a psychiatric hospital or psychiatric nursing home within the meaning of Clause(g) of Section 2 of the Mental Health Act, 1987. (8) In receipt of annual income less than Rupees Three Lakhs (for the State of Assam) or such other higher amount as may be prescribed by the State Govt, if the case is before a court other than the Supreme Court and less than Rupees Three Lakhs or such other amount as may be prescribed by the Central Govt, if the case is before the High Court.
