The Didis of various (SHGs) under Municipal Council are actively engaged in producing a wide range of pottery items as a means of sustainable livelihood. These SHGs were formed and strengthened under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM) implemented by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs under the Government of India.
In Melaghar, the SHG Didis have transformed traditional pottery skills into income-generating enterprises. They produce various items such as earthen lamps (diyas), flower pots, decorative items, water pots, idols, and other household utility products. Their craftsmanship reflects both cultural heritage and modern market demand.
Through collective effort, the SHG members procure raw materials, design products, and market their goods in local markets, fairs, and exhibitions. During festive seasons, especially Diwali and other local celebrations, the demand for their pottery items increases significantly, boosting their income. The support received in the form of training, financial assistance, and market linkage has helped them improve product quality and expand their reach.
This initiative not only provides economic support to the women involved but also strengthens their confidence, leadership skills, and decision-making capacity. The pottery activities have enhanced their financial independence and contributed to the socio-economic development of their families.
In conclusion, the SHG Didis of Melaghar MC are successfully utilizing traditional pottery skills to build sustainable livelihoods. Their dedication and teamwork stand as an inspiring example of women empowerment and community-based economic development.
