ve and sustainable. The Urban Development Department, popularly referred to as UDD, has been playing a pivotal role here, balancing it all from demography to ecology and economy. Although the range of civic services and best-in-class city amenities are facilitated by Urban Local Self-Government bodies like the BMC, the TMC, the PMC and regional planning authorities like CIDCO, MMRDA etc, the UDD is the apex institution designing policies and framing guidelines for the overall well-being of the growing urban population. Without exaggeration, the role of the UDD is all-pervasive---from womb to tomb. The UDD is now working to reinvent the urban environment, finding new ways to weave nature and more open spaces in planning sustainable cities with wider pedestrian walkways, longer cycle tracks, creating urban gardens, all of which is aimed at ease of living. As part of its urban makeover mission, the cities of Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai are set to undergo transformative change with cluster redevelopment of old and decrepit neighbourhoods, providing more space and improved amenities without displacing its old inhabitants and preserving the community culture. The ultimate aim is to make a city not only an engine of growth but also a city that satisfies the soul.
