Advancing Nuclear Safety through Continuous Improvement

As a part of its journey of continuous commitment towards nuclear safety and operational performance, NPCIL has volunteered to participate in World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) newly envisaged Corporate enhanced Performance Monitoring (CePM) programme. The programme is aimed at enabling continuous monitoring and strengthening of nuclear safety and performance across an organisation.

As a part of this pilot initiative, experts from WANO Tokyo Centre visited NPCIL from 10–14 August 2026. The programme was a success, with NPCIL’s vision and plans for fostering a strong culture of continuous improvement in nuclear safety and plant performance receiving appreciation.

The visit also provided an important platform for deliberating on inputs for establishing a robust and effective CePM framework, which have been accepted for further review and consideration by WANO London Office.

As an affiliated member, NPCIL has already been actively participating in WANO's peer review programmes and other initiatives for the benefit of its operating plants and Headquarters.

Another Watershed Moment in India’s Nuclear Journey

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the 300 MWe Bharat Small Modular Reactor (BSMR-300), drafted jointly by Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), was released on August 14, 2026.

This marks another advancement in the indigenous Small Modular Reactor (SMR) programme of the Department of Atomic Energy, India (DAE) complementing its ongoing large nuclear power builds with captive nuclear power option underscoring the commitment towards developing next-generation nuclear technologies for the nation.

This comes as another transformative step in India’s nuclear journey since the formal initiation of BSMR-200, the first indigenous 220 MWe forerunner pressurized water reactor (PWR), a year ago.

BSMR-300 has been conceptualized as a wholly indigenous Gen 3+ PWR. The DPR was released by senior officials of the organisations in the presence of Shri. Vivek Bhasin, Director, BARC and Shri. V. Rajesh, Chairman & Managing Director, NPCIL.
