Today is World Bicycle Day, a fitting moment to celebrate Mumbai Dabbawala, the city’s lunchbox carriers and true heroes on bicycles.

In metropolis Mumbai, a remarkable supply chain has been operating for well over a century. Every morning, thousands of home-cooked meals are collected from households across the city. These lunchboxes, or “dabbas,” are then delivered to office workers with extraordinary precision.

Founded in 1890, the system today includes around 5,000 Dabbawalas. Dressed in their distinctive white attire and traditional Gandhi caps, they collectively deliver nearly 200,000 lunches every day.

What makes their story exceptional is the human ingenuity. Relying primarily on bicycles, handcarts, trains, and a color-coded marking system rather than digital technology, they have built one of the world’s most efficient delivery networks. Despite Mumbai’s density and daily chaos, delays and mistakes remain extremely rare. Their operational excellence has been studied by leading business schools, including Harvard Business School.
