In Maharashtra, taxpayers face multiple issues regarding taxation. Firstly, property taxes and registrations fees are very high due to the State’s high Value-Added Taxation rate. In addition, proposed Goods and Services Tax revisions could bring about additional taxation for various product categories due to changes in the definition of components eligible for GST exemptions. Furthermore, regional business organizations constantly challenge existing tax regulations by placing them before courtrooms for review which results in long legal proceedings and confusion amongst taxpayers. Finally, there is increasing corruption amongst government officers resulting in unjustified compliance requirements being forced onto taxpayers. All these issues have posed significant burden on economic progress in the state and need to be addressed at the earliest by policy makers in order to create an efficient business climate.
