From Reactor to Retina: BARC's Indigenous Powering Advanced and Affordable Cancer Care

Marking the success of indigenously developed Ru-106 RuBy Plaque, the Nuclear Recycle Group of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre , a premier multidisciplinary R&D centre of DAE, organised the 'National Workshop on Ru-106 Plaque Brachytherapy for Treatment of Eye Cancer' today in Mumbai.

Inaugurated by Shri Vivek Bhasin, Director, BARC, the workshop brought together 100+ radiation oncologists, ophthalmologists, medical physicists and experts from leading institutions, including Apollo Hospitals, Centre For Sight, AIIMS, Delhi, Dr Shroff's Charity Eye Hospital, Max Healthcare, and ADGPI - Indian Army Hospitals, providing a platform to share clinical experience, strengthen expertise, and foster referral networks and institutional collaborations to expand the use of BARC-developed Ru-106 plaques across India.

The workshop deliberations established the efficacy of the indigenously developed Ru-106 plaques, demonstrated through excellent treatment outcomes, while also highlighting their success as a highly effective substitute for imported plaques. In view of the positive response and the growing need for brachytherapy, BARC has offered to leverage its network and capabilities to connect with more interested hospitals and facilitate wider access to this technology for patients in need.
