Murud Janjira is a small port town located on the coastal land in Raigad district in the state of Maharashtra. It is situated at a distance of 165 km from Mumbai. Murud town is renowned for the invincible fort called Janjira. It is a getaway spot for tourists and mostly for residents of Mumbai as it’s a short distance from the metropolitan city. Climatic condition of Murud Janjira is pleasant all throughout the year. Summers are not extremely hot as compared to most cities in Maharashtra. The word Janjira was derived from an Arabic word called Jazeera which means an island. Murud is also known as Abyssinians land or Habsan in Marathi. Most people also named it as Jal Jeera meaning fort surrounded with water as it is located in the Arabian Sea. The Siddis had constructed this famous fort in the 12thcentury. Murud was the capital of the Siddis of Janjira. The only fort in Maharashtra which was not subjugated, although the British, the Portuguese, the Dutch tried attacking the city. The Maratha King Shivaji tried to dominate the fortress almost six times but failed in every attempt.
