கன்னியாகுமரி மாவட்டம் உருவாகி இன்றுடன் 60வது ஆண்டுகள் ஆகிறது.

இந்தியா சுதந்திரம் அடைவதற்கு முன்னர் கன்னியாகுமரி மாவட்டம் கேரளாவுடன் இணைந்திருந்தது. சுதந்திரத்துக்கு பின்னர் மொழி வாரி மாநில கோரிக்கை வலுத்த போது கன்னியாகுமரி மாவட்டத்தில் வாழும் தமிழர்கள் குமரி மாவட்டம் தமிழகத்துடன் இணைவதை விரும்பினர். இதற்கு கேரள அரசு எதிர்ப்பு தெரிவித்தது. இதனால் போராட்டம் ஏற்பட்டது. நேசமணி தலைமையில் போராட்டம் வலுபெற்ற தடியடி, துப்பாக்கிச்சூடு என்ற நீண்ட போராட்டத்துக்கு பின்னர் 1956 நவம்பர்வ ஒன்றாம் தேதி குமரி மாவட்டம் தமிழகத்துடன் இணைக்கப்பட்டது.
