Introducing July’s Author of the Month—Nilanjana Sudeshna “Jhumpa” Lahiri.
Born in England to Indian immigrant parents, Jhumpa Lahiri’s world of writing is versatile, multilingual and autobiographical; a rich bibliography containing short stories, essays, and novels encompassing the Indian-immigrant themes and, in recent years, essays and novels written in the Italian language. Her lucid and illustrative writing strikes the reader immediately.
The ‘Interpreter of Maladies’ is a great introduction through a collection of stories that explore balancing tradition in a new world; ‘The Lowland’ depicts familial bonds through the story of two brothers in a politically charged environment; ‘Unaccustomed Earth’ dives into second and third-generation Indian-American characters interconnected in a culturally diverse environments; and ‘The Namesake’ moves between the old and new and the past and future in a social, religious and cultural context for a couple that moved from Kolkata to Massachusetts.
We invite you to the Signet Library to explore her works and expand your reading list and perspective!
