Mica mining – the sad story. Devil’s Money from Ghost mines

Mica is the first type of fluorescent silicate mineral. India is the world's largest producer of mica, which is used in cosmetics and paint production.
Among the mineral makeups offered by many big cosmetic companies, the most colourful are the multi-coloured mica that make your skin glow with the lives of thousands of young children at the risk of their own lives. Their job was to crawl through the tiny caves at the bottom and collect mica ores. It was only possible for children under the age of ten. Most of the mica mines are situated in the north region especially in Bihar. (Jharkand)

According to data from the 2011 census, the latest available, at least 10.1 million children between the ages of five and 14 are "economically active" (5.6 million boys and 4.5 girls). Most children (about 8 million) live in rural areas.

Several deaths occurred from illness by respiring the toxic mica dust and by getting trapped in a coolapsed so called "ghost mines". When these deaths started exposing, Indian government put a lot of efforts to legalise the mining of mica and to stop child labour and ensure better wages and conditions for mine workers.

Inspite of it, due to poverty, profits are still made on the back of the children which brings sparkle to the world. This is the shameful truth behind makeup’s shimmer and cars’ glamour.
