Israeli population-based study supports research showing that vitamin D supplements could help people avoid serious respiratory effects of Covid-19.

A low level of vitamin D in blood plasma appears to be an independent risk factor for Covid-19 infection and hospitalization, say scientists from Israeli HMO Leumit Health Services and the Azrieli Faculty of Medicine of Bar-Ilan University. The researchers came to their conclusion using real-world data and an Israeli cohort of 782 Covid-19 positive patients and 7,025 Covid-19 negative patients.

The scientists’ research follows a few worldwide studies that have shown the pronounced impact of vitamin D metabolites on the immune system response and on the development of Covid-19 infection by the novel SARS CoV-2 coronavirus.

The amount of vitamin D required should be “personalized and take into account patients’ age, gender, race and ethnicity, nutritional status and health condition.”

The team was surprised to discover that “chronic medical conditions, like dementia, cardiovascular disease and chronic lung disease that were considered to be very risky in previous studies, were not found as increasing the rate of infection in our study.”

Presently this joint Israeli research team is planning to evaluate factors associated with Covid-19 mortality in Israel.

From point-of-care kits to Mass sampling and Breath Analysis, Israeli scientists are inventing more accurate tests and Faster results that could finally let human save from Corona.

The Covid-19 solutions are faster, more accurate testing to ensure carriers are identified and go into isolation before infecting others. Normally it takes one to five days to get results from the standard RT-PCR test to identify the RNA in virus’ genetic material on Throat and nasal swabs. Due to increase in testing and sending the samples to labs the result takes time. It is also possible that due to viral load on the day of sampling the results are negative and next day it might be positive.

The Israeli DDRD and Indian DRDO collaborated and joined hands to speed the process of testing. In July 2020 the Directorate of Defense Research and Development (DDRD) sent a delegation to India with four Israeli Covid-19 testing prototypes. The team is in India to collect thousands of samples and analyze them using various innovative techniques.

The Israeli team will collect samples and analyze them using breathalyzer test from the Tera Group. They will also use a rapid test using saliva samples. The results appear in about 40 minutes. This method could become the basis of a mass testing kit for workplaces, points of care and households.

Another one is a Pooling technique. Its goal is to speed up the process. It enables RT-PCR testing to be performed on a combined sample from 32 or 64 patients. A simple pooling technique for testing eight samples at once is already in use throughout Israel.

And the fourth is BATM's fast-result diagnostics kit to detect Covid-19 from saliva samples in about half an hour.

Israeli wastewater analysis takes the 'blood test of a city,' giving early warning of outbreaks and data to limit lockdowns.

Kando, an Israeli wastewater management company ( https://www.kando.eco/) is running a pilot project seeking traces of ARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in the municipal sewage system of Ashkelo.

During initial findings the results suggested that tracking coronavirus remnants in the sewer network is a more efficient gauge of the extent of outbreaks than testing individuals – especially since many people show no symptoms or delayed symptoms of Covid-19.

By alerting municipal authorities and offering actionable insights, the company intended to help cities around the world prevent wholesale lockdowns and mitigate future outbreaks.

The coastal city of Ashkelon (population 150,000) was chosen as the pilot site as it was believed to have a low number of cases, aside from the city’s “coronavirus hotels” housing recovering Covid-19 patients. The researchers discovered significant remnants of the coronavirus in municipal wastewater, indicating early detection of outbreaks in local neighborhoods.

The Kando method includes input from experts in disciplines including virology, water engineering, medicine, epidemiology, biostatistics and public health policy. Their unique methodology enables the company to detect and trace the presence of the virus and calculate its concentration with these substances factored into the equation, and to integrate epidemiological evidence in order to pinpoint emerging Covid-19 hotspots. This will allow authorities to take actions to contain future outbreaks.

Israeli biomedical company IceCure Medical, the developer of technology that freezes cancerous tumors, announced that it raised NIS 20.7 million ($6 million) in an equity share offering to investors last week.

The company said the capital raising was supported by Rosario Capital, Yair Capital Offerings and Dinance Ltd., Apax Underwriters and Offerings, offering consultant Yaron Iluz and Naor El-Hai and Advs. Reut Alfiah, Oded Har Even, and Gal Cohen from the Sullivan international law firm.

It also reported that the offering was oversubscribed with a demand of NIS 24 million ($7 million.) In other words, investors ordered more shares than were being issued.

IceCure CEO Eyal Shamir says the offering “ensures the fulfillment of our strategic plan to continue expansion and growth in the scope of our activities.”

Founded in 2006, IceCure developed a pair of cryoablation systems for treating malignant and benign tumors. The treatments involve streaming liquid nitrogen in a closed circuit and then freezing the tumor with a unique needle developed by IceCure. The company says the healthy tissue remains untouched.

In 2018, IceCure reported great success rates following clinical trials across the US using the IceSense3 system. IceCure said doctors performed the procedures on 146 patients affected by early-stage breast cancer, a majority (103) of whom were under monitoring for almost two years. The company reported that out of the 146 women, one saw the cancer recur.

IceCure touts its procedures as non-invasive, safe, and a viable alternative to surgery. The procedure can be performed in a clinic in about an hour, without the need for general anesthesia or hospitalization.

The company says its progress is driven by the increasing global accelerating trend for minimally invasive treatments, that remove the need for expensive operating rooms and medical staff during surgical procedures. The solution can also help institutions free-up overloaded operating rooms around the world, as well as further prevent and reduce possible infections in medical procedures. These issues are of critical importance during the COVID-19 pandemic.

IceCure’s proprietary, flagship ProSenseTM liquid-nitrogen based system, has FDA approval and a CE mark, according to Shamir.

The Economic Mission in New Delhi has assisted the company to enter India and appointed their first distributor in New Delhi. IceCure has successfully registered the machine with CDSCO (Indian Government).

Nanox an Israel-based Medical Imaging company ( https://www.nanox.vision/) secured additional funding $59 million from global investors, to wrap up an investment that started in November 2019.

The company is supported by strategic investors SK Telecom, Foxconn, Yozma Korea, Industrial Alliance and additional private investors. The new financing brings the total investment to nearly $110 million. The funding will be used to support the rollout of its imaging system (called Nanox.ARC) worldwide, the company said. The system has been pre-sold in 13 countries, representing more than $300 million in service fees for the next three years, according to the company.

Nanox started in 2012, was formed by a group of former Sony engineers focused on nanotechnology, intending to utilize that technology to solve the problem of early detection imaging in healthcare. It aims to “democratize health care” by offering a “digital camera for the full body” among its range of medical imaging services that operate on a pay-per-scan business model and include online radiology diagnostics and artificial intelligence decision assistive algorithms implementation.

Cloud Adoption Accelerates in Post Covid-19

“Who led the digital transformation of your company: The CEO, CTO or Covid-19?”
There is a grain of truth in that joke, as we seek for some humor given perhaps, during the worst global crisis we are facing in the recent history.
Cloud adoption is firmly branded as the “new norm” for companies during Covid-19, as we find new ways to conduct businesses. Being one of the biggest technology trends of recent times, Covid-19 has emphasized the significance of cloud computing even further. Across industries, cloud remains to be one of the booming segments of IT spend.

Post-Covid19, we see a trend of more companies migrating 100% of their applications to cloud, when previously, it has been that companies were migrating parts of their IT systems to the cloud one at a time.

Being termed as “Start-up Nation”, Israel is a country with the birth of many innovative software technologies. Needless to say, Israeli companies are some of the first few to venture into this cloud revolution. And with the ever-changing demand landscape, we see the adaptability of these companies as they improve and evolve.

Gigaspaces is the first solution - GigaSpaces provides the fastest in-memory computing platforms for real-time insight to action and extreme transactional processing. Companies can operationalize machine learning and transactional processing to gain real-time insights on their fast and historical data, and act upon them in the moment. The always-on platforms for mission-critical applications across cloud, on-premise or hybrid, are leveraged by hundreds of organizations worldwide across financial services, insurance, retail, transportation, telecom and healthcare.

Guardicore is the second solution - GuardiCore is a data center and cloud security company that protects organizations’ core assets using flexible and easy-to-deploy microsegmentation controls. It develops technologies for internal data center security and breach detection, offering enterprises real-time visibility, understanding, and response for illicit activity within their data centers.

Spot is the third solution - Spot is a SaaS optimization platform that aims to help businesses reduce costs while maintaining high availability and performance. Spot facilitates the balance between different infrastructure purchase options and offers a line of smart infrastructure products that bring the public cloud experience to any hardware or facility. Spot had been recently acquired by NetApp Inc (Nasdaq-listed hybrid cloud data services company) in June 2020.

COVID-19 has been a game changer. If nothing else, this pandemic has proven that cloud-based technologies work. And they work well. It is then up to us to let go of the past and embrace the new norm. (DALEY, 2020)
