A Tribute to a Legend: Nana Patekar (1951 - 2026)

Today, we mourn the loss of an iconic artist, a powerful voice, and a deeply committed humanitarian. Nana Patekar was not just a master of cinema; he was a fierce advocate for the marginalized, always standing firmly by those in need.

Through his profound art and real-life philanthropy, he spoke volumes for justice and human dignity. The voice may fall silent, but the intensity, the art, and the legacy will echo forever.

Rest in peace, Nana Patekar. Your spirit lives on in our continued fight for equity and human rights.

On Gandhi Jayanti, NHRO pays tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and the enduring principles of dignity, equality and non-violence that shaped his public life.

October 2 is observed in India as Gandhi Jayanti and internationally as the International Day of Non-Violence. For Gandhi, non-violence was not merely the absence of physical conflict; it was also a way of resisting injustice without abandoning the dignity of human life.

This remains deeply relevant to human rights. Dignity cannot be conditional on a person's caste, gender, religion, economic position or social influence. Equality is meaningful only when it extends beyond institutions and becomes visible in the everyday treatment of people.

Gandhi's work brought questions of poverty, discrimination, social exclusion and the dignity of marginalised communities into India's national consciousness. His idea of Sarvodaya — the welfare and uplift of all — continues to offer a useful lens through which to examine these questions.

The figure standing over the map of India in today's artwork therefore represents more than a historical leader. It raises a question that remains relevant today:

What does the freedom of a nation mean if dignity and equality are not experienced by every individual within it?

Perhaps that is one of the most enduring ways to remember Gandhi—not simply by recalling his life, but by reflecting on the principles he placed at the centre of public life.

Azad Bharat Conclave 2.0 | Proceedings

The National Human Rights Organisation (NHRO) successfully organised the second edition of the Azad Bharat Conclave under the theme “Good Governance for Viksit Bengal, Towards Viksit Bharat.”

The conclave brought together speakers from public administration, law, academia, social development, community leadership, sports and other areas of public life to deliberate on key dimensions of governance and development in Bengal.

The programme was graced by Hon’ble Minister Shri Umesh Rai, whose presence added significance to the proceedings and the broader conversation on governance and development.

The panel discussions were structured around four foundational pillars of good governance — Transparency, Participation, Collaboration, and Inclusive Development — with each discussion examining the practical challenges and institutional responsibilities associated with these areas.

The conversations addressed questions surrounding accountable institutions, meaningful citizen participation, cooperation between different sections of society, and the need to ensure that development remains accessible and responsive to diverse communities.

The participation of professionals with varied institutional and field-level experience allowed the discussions to approach these subjects from multiple perspectives, while keeping the larger focus on Bengal’s development and its contribution towards the vision of a Viksit Bharat.

NHRO expresses its sincere gratitude to Hon’ble Minister Shri Umesh Rai, all the distinguished panelists, delegates and members of the organising team for their participation and contribution towards the successful conduct of Azad Bharat Conclave 2.0.
