Hon’ble MoS (I/C), Ministry of Earth Sciences, Dr Jitendra Singh responded in the Lok Sabha to a Written Question on IMPACT AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE DEEP OCEAN MISSION.

Stated that:

Launched in 2021, the Deep Ocean Mission (DOM) is advancing India’s Blue Economy through six key verticals, including deep-sea technologies, ocean climate services, biodiversity exploration, deep-ocean surveys, ocean energy, and marine biology.

MATSYA-6000, India’s flagship human submersible, has completed its design and wet harbour trials, while the indigenous deep-sea mining system successfully demonstrated the collection of over 100 kg of polymetallic nodules from a depth of 1,173 metres.

Under the Mission, India has strengthened ocean observations, discovered new hydrothermal vent fields and deep-sea species, established a Marine Microbial Repository, and initiated the indigenous construction of a new all-weather ocean research vessel, significantly enhancing the country’s deep-ocean research and exploration capabilities.

Hon'ble MoS (I/C), Ministry of Earth Sciences,
Dr Jitendra Singh responded in the Lok Sabha to a Written Question on PREPAREDNESS FOR EL NIÑO CONDITIONS.

Stated that:

IMD provided advance guidance on the likely development of El Niño conditions during the 2026 Southwest Monsoon through its seasonal forecasts, enabling preparedness and planning by stakeholders.

IMD forecast below-normal seasonal rainfall for the 2026 Southwest Monsoon, revising the seasonal forecast from 92% of the Long Period Average (LPA) to 90% of the LPA in its Second Stage Long Range Forecast.

IMD regularly issues seasonal, monthly, and daily weather forecasts, district and block-level rainfall information, and monthly El Niño updates, while providing weather and climate inputs to the PMO, MHA, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, and State Governments to support preparedness and response.

Hon'ble MoS (I/C), Ministry of Earth Sciences,
Dr Jitendra Singh responded in the Lok Sabha to an Unstarred Question on ADVANCING MONSOON SCIENCE, CLIMATE RESEARCH AND WEATHER FORECASTING.

Stated that:

Mission Mausam is strengthening India's weather forecasting capabilities through advanced climate models, next-generation Doppler Weather Radars, High-Performance Computing (HPC), AI/ML-enabled forecasting, satellite observations, and an expanded meteorological observation network.

IMD has developed citizen-centric weather services, including the Panchayat Mausam Seva Portal, enabling Panchayat-level weather forecasts and agrometeorological advisories through digital platforms and WhatsApp for last-mile dissemination.

The Ministry is advancing monsoon science through collaborations with national and international research institutions, while NCMRWF has developed high-resolution climate reanalysis datasets and IITM is enhancing the Monsoon Mission forecast system to improve seasonal monsoon and extreme weather prediction.

Advancing Intelligent Nowcasting with IMD NOVA

IMD NOVA is enhancing severe weather nowcasting through intelligent forecasting capabilities.

Integrating lightning, radar, and Automatic Weather Station (AWS) data enables real-time thunderstorm monitoring, automated storm tracking, one-hour movement prediction, and forecast verification.

Supporting Mission Mausam, the platform improves forecast accuracy, strengthens early warning services and helps build a more weather-ready and resilient India.
