The Chlor-Alkali industry makes nearly 71% of India's basic chemicals.

With 36 plants across the country, this sector supports major industrial processes. Hydrogen (H2), Chlorine (Cl₂) and Caustic Soda (NaOH), produced simultaneously through the electrolysis of brine, are essential raw materials for industries as varied as textiles, aluminium, paper, PVC, soaps, detergents, and glass, including the treatment of drinking water that millions depend on daily.

India also holds a significant share of global Chlor-Alkali capacity, and the sector has been growing steadily over the years, reflecting increasing demand from the industries it serves.

Under the Bureau of Energy Efficiency's PAT scheme, designated Chlor-Alkali plants have delivered cumulative energy savings of 2.27 lakh TOE across PAT Cycle I-VI, reflecting a sector that is not just foundational for other industries, but committed to efficiency.
